GearBox oil

Featured Replies

At what milage would you recomend for the gearbox oil to be changed.

Should be fine upto 60k miles. I changed mine about 75k when the clutch was changed.

Skoda will likely tell you it's 'sealed for life', but it made a noticeable difference for me.

For the cost of the oil, I'll probably have it changed again this year to see if there's a noticeable improvement.

If its a dsg I was told 40k.

I first changed the oil to full synthetic in my mk1 when the gear change became notchy. It was such an improvement I did it every couple of years thereafter.

My mk2, a used 60,000 miler, was incredibly stiff in the gear change department when I first got it. It had probably spent 99.99% of its life so far pounding up motorways in top. I changed the oil and lubed the not so clever cable linkage and all is now smooth, apart from the rubbish 1st/3rd gate.

At my last major service (120k) I was told that the gearbox oil was 'not a service item' as there was no service gearbox oil listed on their computer system.

As I've done 120k and the gear changes still seem fine, I'm inclined to leave mine alone for the time being (unless anyone can provide evidence to the contrary).

My 07 combi eligance with 230k is done at 60k, as per skoda h/book. T0 date I havent had any issues in relation to the DSG box so I will stick to the 60k rule

Been worrying about changing my gearbox oil for no good reason except 159000km.(99375miles). Does not seem to be a maintenance recommendation to change the oil - just check the level. Saw this info on another site. Think I may buy the OEM proper stuff!

I would go on feel TBH. If the change doesn't feel notchy or stiff, then I'd leave it.

If it's not broke, don't fix it :)

Mines is notchy in the morning/cold then when its warm its fine, will be gettin changed next weekend.

Lots of service items are deleted from the schedule so that 3 yr service cost for fleet users look low. They not necessarily the sort of planned preventative maintenance gospel that some think. They certainly don't represent the optimum schedule for most people who come on here.

As far as the gear box is concerned, it is a pretty hostile environment for oil. The polymers are chopped up by the action of the gears and syncros. Depending on the actual design and layout, the swarf produced over time can be reintroduced into the working surfaces.

Both of these potential problems can be largely eradicated by a simple oil change. I guess you pay your money and take your choice,

ps, at what age is the cost of a new/rebuilt gearbox greater than the resale value of the car? how much does a whining, snicking gearbox devalue a car at resale?

OK, I feel real bad now... going to get mine done sooner rather than later!

How much is that costing? Mines the same, notchy at 1st but fine once warmed up.

Pass mate, its getting added the bill for clutch and dampers being fitted.

Many gearboxes, especially autos are shown as sealed for life ( BMW and Audi) however if you read their forums they have regular failures (Audi S8 at 100K) and specialists recommend regular oil changes.

As my wife has told me

" You will be driving your car until the wheels fall off" I will be changing my gearbox oil at some point.

I've changed my oil at 110k and it was dark brown so well worth changing if you've done 100k.

Also stick to VAG gearbox oil only as there is no listed spec (just part number) and seems very thin to ensure changes are smooth when the oil is cold.

Non VAG oils will make the change notchy when the oil is cold.

OK, I feel real bad now... going to get mine done sooner rather than later!

I'd be happy to do it for you.
