Double DIN stereo query

Featured Replies

Hell all, I'm after some advice. I'm installing a double DIN Kenwood DCS head unit into my 54 plate Mk.1 Octy Vrs. I've removed the old stereo etc and butchered the surround to fit the cage (!!!) but wanted to check a few things:

1. I understand the black and brown connectors that go into the back of the steteo are for the power and speakers, but what is the yellow/blue/green connector for?:

At the time I bought the stereo I was told I didn't need any audio connectors as the wiring in the Octy was plug n play.

2. I've bought an aerial booster (PC5-90). I'm going to connect the blue wire from the booster to the remote switch wire (blue/white) on the stereo. Is this the best wire to connect to?

3. Where's the best place to connect the handbrake switch wire to? Is it to an earth or 12v? Best to connect to somewhere like the cigarette lighter or splice into the stereo wiring?

Thanks.

cd autochanger is the extra block connector

Don't forget to change the red and yellow wires around, permanent and switched lives

Sent from my Galaxy S3, not a Crapple!

What does it need a connection to the handbrake for?

So you can't watch DVD while driving I'd assume. TBH I'd want to bypass that

I did wonder if that is what it was for, but I could not be bothered to look up the device being fitted :-)

Thanks for the responses so far. :)

I've swapped over the red and yellow wires. The handbrake wire is so that the unit will only play DVD's when the handbrake is on. How do you bypass this? Also, is it OK to connect the aerial booster to the remote switch wire?

Thanks.

I'd connect the aerial to the switched live.

It will depend on your unit but to bypass the handbrake the wire will either need to be earthed out or fed 12v (usually earthed out) but you will need to find out what your unit needs as putting 12v to it could bugger it if it's supposed to be earthed

generally the power injector for the aerial is attached to the "power aerial" ouput from the stereo, an aftermarwket loom this would normally be either blue or yellow. A5 in this image

This PDF installation guide, suggested -ve for the parking/hand brake sensor (see page 69)

My Kenwood has the 'dvd' wire earthed. (light green iirc).

Thanks everyone. The manual doesn't specify whether the handbrake wire needs to be connected to earth or 12v. It just says to connect to the handbrake switch. I'll try the earth first as nitrovrs suggested as it's a light green wire on my unit too.

I'll report back on the weekend after the unit's been fitted and is (hopefully) working.

Thanks again to everyone for their advice! :)

Just an update to this thread; got the stereo installed in the car a few weeks ago:

Not something I will be ever doing again in one of these! Absolute nightmare to get the cage in properly. Sounds great though.

Now trying to get the new JBL's in the front doors sounding good by chopping away the foam door cover from behind them as they currently sound worse than the standard speakers!

Thanks again to everyone for their all their help and advice! :)

If your chopping away the foam from behind the speaker you may end up with damp foot wells now.

I havent got wet footwells and I have no foam have a look in my photos :)
