Intercooler help, temps, ease etc

Featured Replies

So i've read a bit about heatsoak, I'm remapped i have a few questions since i have the stock SMIC with louvres in the wheel arch.

1. What sort of temps can we get upto in summer?

2. What can you get away with without heatsoak as far as booting the car? e.g one run through 2 gears (3rd and 4th say to 4000rpm in each) or just one run through one gear (say 3rd) then the heat soaks hit?

3. Did anyone find the louvres actaully work?

4. On the dyno one run through one gear didnt show any heat soak - probably need to do VCDS logs.

5. What is the cheapest easiest option to install i see some cheap intercooler where you have to run a pipe from the left and to the right of the intercooler and one where both ports where on the left hand side. And what sort of costs am I looking at?

I guess for just an occasional boot which i do, as i never drive the car that hard really is a FMIC needed?

Unless you live in a hot climate, drive the car on a track a lot, or have a hybrid turbo setup, then a FMIC is not really necessary.

You might feel the power drop when it's really hot in the middle of summer, but the louvres in the arch help quite a bit to get the hot air out.

Well, going up hill in my missus' standard ibiza PD130 I hit 70 easily and it was not hot weather. Hit 80 degrees in my old remapped toledo PD130, and over 100 in a hybrid with SMIC!!!

The SMIC gets heat soaked very quickly. But its ok with a few short bursts of power, it's sustained power (like constant foot on floor up hill or on a track etc) that kills it without time for it to catch breath and cool down!
