Sound Proofing Mod

Featured Replies

Just fitted a sound proofing kit to my Furby - it's a SEAT part as fitted to the Ibiza TDI 130. Thought it might cut down the clatter at idle. Clatter is more muted, but the big drop in noise is on acceleration and M/way cruising. At the legal limit you cannot hear the engine at all. I know this won't suit everyone, as for some the noise is half the fun. But if you do a lot of long M/way journeys the extra refinement is welcome.

Part No. is 038103954G, not cheap at

Does the engine cover go over the top or is that lost?

Yes it fits back on top nice and snug. Would rather defeat the object without it wouldn't it?

Nice one, been looking into making the whole car quieter, might go get this tomoz - gonna fit some dynamat soon as well i'll let you know what the difference is like

I might consider getting that, what is it made of and how does it fit on?

could i get one for my 1.4?

It's made of some kind of dense foam and it's pre-cut to shape and fits simply by moulding it around the cylinder head. Very easy to fit.

I suspect it wouldn't fit the 1.4 as it's specific to the TDI pumpe duse engine.

I am just about to order this from my local SEAT place... just a quick check to make sure it will fit my PD100.

Also, how come SEATs have this part, and not Skodas? Surely we have the more refined brand!

I've been for a ride in my uncles 1.4TDi Audi A2 and am amazed at how much quieter it is than my Furby... hopefully this kit and some Dynamat will make mine a more refined commuting machine.

Can you still hear the exhaust note? strangely I actually can hear a burble from the exhaust on idle, not sure if this is normal or if my exhaust is nackered but it sounds nice and when revvVV'D very throaty, I would like the best of both but I guess the only way to tell for sure is to buy the thing...

The Cupra intake makes the engine sound a little more throaty I suppose.

As our car is soundproofed the noise inside is a lot less then 'from factory'. Still tempted to get this extra padding though as the idle-when-cold-clatter is still pretty audible.

Thanks for this tip.. Have now fitted and makes a surprising difference to lower cabin noise levels for a bit of expensive foam

Hmm - thinks I'll be ordering something in the near future ;)

Perhaps they'll have something in stock when I'm in The Netherlands, dunno if it's gonna cost a fortune or not but worth a shot :D

Surprised how this sound shield isn't fitted to the Furby and is to the Ibiza, despite the Ibiza weighing around 120 kg less! Surely 2 extra doors cannot raise its weight that much?????

Indeed it's odd - that said, is the engine tuned the same and cooled the same?

I always thought they were pretty much identical...

I don't get the whole difference in weight thing between fabia and ibiza either... seems a bit odd really.

Back on topic, I have fitted the soundproofing thing today and it really does make a difference. Skoda probably didn't put it on due to cost constraints or something. Definately a recommended mod.

Hellfire, you can still hear the exhaust - and some clatter still comes through too - but it is more muted. Basically, when you are pootling around, the engine is very quiet. However, you can clearly hear it working when you put your foot down. The mod just makes cruising a quieter experience...

Nice one...

Any chance you could get a photo of the engine/engine bay with the sound proofing fitted and the engine cover back on

Will do... be on tonight or tomorrow.

Ummm why? Once the engine cover's on you can't see the soundproofing. The cover hides it completely - the engine bay looks absolutely standard.

How snugly does this part fit against the engine cover? I've already done another pikey mod of sorts replacing the soft foam moulding on the plastic engine cover with thicker soundproof felt, which did reduce the clatter a bit, but it's pretty dense stuff so not sure if the cover would fit if it's tight with the ibiza bit on there...

I put mine in today and spent an hour commuting around London. Yes, the car is quieter but only by a couple of dB. My dad couldn't notice any difference at all. It is a smidge more refined which is nice... but was it worth 38.75? Not really. Haven't been on the motorway yet, so hopefully it will be quieter then, though my PD100 was hardly noisy at speed.

As I said in opening this thread, the real difference is during M/way cruising...

The only reason for Skoda not fitting this must be orders from VW to maintain a lower quality image than the other VAG cars. :thumbdwn:

It wouldn't surprise me if there were some things that are kept different on purpose.

This makes sense though - after all, we are getting the benefits of the VAG group parts bin, and based on how well Skoda is doing with the Fabia generally speaking, no real reason to complain.

IMHO the VW is slightly more 'luxury' in it's material choice for say dashboard, and it has the IMO nicer blue clocks & so forth.

If I remember correctly though, Seat was the sporty one, Skoda the 'value for money' one, VW the 'standard' one and Audi the one where you pay a tad more to get frankly, a slightly better car again.

I personally love it - as we are able to tweak our cars a little to improve on the standard package at relatively low cost for most of these things.

Sound proofing materials arent the cheapest and it's an easy way to reduce cost whilst keeping the important bits.

Having heard the Octy (I) Symphony I'm dead-happy about not having to put up with that level of performance in the Furby. Guessing the Octy II will have at least a half-decent stereo system now. Again cost saving I'm guessing.

The more you pay, the less the compromise I guess :D

Part ordered, not in stock so was told could be a few weeks - let's hope it is a little sooner than that :D
