Active Sound - pretentious frivolity or must-have enhancement?

Featured Replies

The new Seat Leon 2.0tdi has a speaker that alters the engine note being played into the cabin!

So you can pretend to be in a golf gti apparently!

I see you've been fddling with me old car.

Seems like cheating to me. A bit like Chery Cole's singing voice.

You got a V6?

Nah mate it's on autotune.

Not a puny V6 but a V8.

Not sure how i will be able to record the sound if it works. I thought about recording it on my phone but then my phone will be kinda busy playing the V8 soundtrack.

In all fairness i suspect it wont work at all but am still clinging to the slight hope that it will be amazing.

Whwn i was in the BMW dealership before i sold my last car i got chatting to a salesman i knew as i bought a car from him years before hand when he worked at another Aberdeen garage. Cant rememebr how we got onto the topic but he said that BMW were planning on offering a similar thing as an optional extra on ther cars i.e synthesised car sound sto drown out the diesel rattle. I remmebr thinking that it seemed like a good idea. He also mentioned that BMW cars would soon be available with 4wd. The latter has since come to pass so i wonder if the former will to?

I know they have done this to a certain degree with the new M5 but its more of an enhancement to the original engine noise rather than pure synthesised sounds so maybe we will see this as an option in the future.

Ill be honest if it was a couple of hundred quid id specify it. Only of course if its better than the OBD bluetooth android thingy im away to try and hook up.

If it works ill try and record it and upload it somehow.

Oh my god. Just hooked up my OBD bluetooth adapter and linked it to my android phone. Took a minute or 2 to figure out how to play around with the settings but then, oh yes it works. Amazing V8 burble from a diesel.

I wouldnt have believed it unless i had just heard it myself. Have only tried it sitting in neutral as i need to clear snow off the car but revving it up sounds superb. Cant beleive how bassy the bolero unit is as the burble has a real deep tone to it. It reacts very quickly to throttle inputs so the noise mimicks the revs very very closely indeed. Cant wait to go for a drive with it. You do need the volume set quite high with the media volume on the phone at full and the aux input level set to high but on near full volume its deafening.

All i can say is get on amazon and get this OBD 2 port adaptor for a tenner, download the app for 70p and see for yourself.

I fully expected this to be 5hite but i am serioulsy surprised how well it works. What a laugh.

I do feel a tad silly for buying this but stuff it, it is such a laugh i dont care. It is a really deep addictive V8 noise like the kind you get from an american muscle car.

The blow off noise which is optional seems crap but then maybe thats because i have dsg and havent tried it on the move yet but i dont like blow off valves anyway so i have disabled that option.

I will endeavour to record the sound somehow over the next day or so and upload it.

Do yourselves a favour and put a smile on your face for a tenner. Absolutely superb.
