Elegance Airbags & Pressure Sensors - where are they all?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting the poor front speakers replaced in my 2012 Elegance and the installer says they can install the front woofer and tweeter replacements in the original locations so that the car looks the same (behind the door panels and inside the A-pillars). My car has front, side and head airbags (curtain) airbags but on pages 116 & 119 of the Fabia manual it looks like the head airbag extends to the A-pillar (where the tweeter is) it says that there are airbag pressure sensors in the doors.

Will the speaker fitter be knowledagble of all this? (it's a 'FourCars' installer as my Skoda dealer says they don't do this sort of work). Should I be concerned?

I've had the a pillars of plenty of times with no issues.

Thanks P1TT8ULL - are the pillars easy to get off? And do you know what size the tweeter is? (I want to make sure the new one will fit OK). I'm wondering if the speakers installer will know how to deal with the pressure sensors in the doors.... :wonder:

Removing the a-pillar cover to change a speaker shouldnt be an issue i wouldnt of thought, even more so as the air bag is designed to deploy on a impact to the out side rather then some audio installer playing with the speakers.

The best peice of advice with people such as these is think of them as Idoits. Sounds harsh but it will encourage you to tell him as much as you know but the cars as possible, best case situation is he know how to work with it, job done,

Worst case his unsure and does a bit of research or seeks advice or more knowledgable party :)

It can be insulting to some professionals just play the niave card and say you merely trying to help, no harm done :)

There aren't pressure sensors in the doors on a Fabia II. They are mounted behind the b pillar trim up front and the rears are behind the lower c pillar trim.

Thanks CRASH67, I think I'll pop into the audio installer's showroom and let him look at my car before I engage him to do the job. I can also show him the relevant pages in the car's manual relating to the airbags and pressure sensors so that he can be 100% sure of what he'll be dealing with (I'll leave the manual in the car). Better safe than sorry!

Thanks Tech1e - but my 2012 UK Fabia Elegance owner's manual says on Page 17 in the "Warning" column:-

"The airbag control unit operates with pressure sensors located in the front doors..."

It goes on to say about never driving if the speakers have been removed, etc. etc. I can scan the page in question and post it here if it helps to clarify.

Clarify it all you like. Ill believe my own eyes over anything written in manuals tbh. You couldn't effectively run pressure sensors in a Fabia II door as the rear aperture is sealed with a bit of foam. Plus added to the fact I've changed quite a few of the crash sensors I know where they are mounted.

Apologies, Tech1e, I wasn't being disresptful in questioning your statement. I just want to ensure that the installer of my new door speakers is aware of any pitfalls they may or may not encounter. By your knowledge, am I right in assuming that you do such installations yourself? ( I only ask because the installer I was thinking of using is also from Worcs).

I could do, up until very recently I was a master tech at a Skoda dealer. Just renewed an entire wiring loom on a Fabia II inc the airbag harness hence knowing where the sensors are.

side airbags are in the front seats, front airbags are in the dash/steering wheel

A pillars are easy to take off, no tools needs, just slide the whole plastic cover up then lift off.

The tweeters in the A pillars are built in, so will need to removed. i think i posted a picture up...
