Golf Equivalent ?

Featured Replies

Any idea if Skoda have plans for a Golf-equivalent model to fill the gap between the Fabia and Octavia?

Surely that would just be an Octavia without any boot at all?

Only if a Golf is a Passat with the boot cut off.

So you're saying the Octavia and the Passat are equivalent?

Yep , near as dammit.

Have you seen them parked side by side?

Yes - the Octavia's shorter, and isn't a saloon! And is built on a Golf chassis... :D

Rob.

Nah.

Octavia is a Bora hatch...

Mark

... with a usable boot space, to boot!!!

Yep, but the Octavia is on the Golf platform (extended) whilst the Superb is on the Passat platform (extended)

Jon

So what's the Superb?

(apart from being a Passat with a little extra between the wheels).

I think someone said that the Octavia is built on the Bora chassis which is pretty much the same as the mk4 Golf. I must admit I always thought it was based on the Golf chassis.

The Leon and Octavia are considered competitors and are similar in size if not boot space. The Leon is also considered a competitor to the Golf. So the Octavia must be Skoda's Golf albeit being a better car and better value for money.:D

IMHO of course.

;)

The Bora is also built on the Golf chassis, as is the Octavia, Leon and A3. And the Golf. :)

The superb is the LWB passat project, it was cancelled by VW when they decided to stop trying to take the Passat upmarket (W8 etc) and create a new car for that sector (the Phaeton - ironically Phaeton is an old Skoda name!!)

The cancelled LWB passat project was then handed over to Skoda, which became the Superb.

The TT and Beetle are also on the same platform.

I don't understand why Octavia is seen as a Leon competitor.

Talking size (not image) Leon competes with Golf/A3, Octavia competes with Toledo/Bora/A4.

That's how I look at it, anyway!

Mark

Isn't the A4 the Passat-based Audi? I get confused with Audis though, must be the imaginative names... ;)

almost right.... they do sell the passat lwb in some asian markets..

The Passat is actually based on the A4, the A4 was out before hand and when we take our Passat apart many of the parts are stamped Audi but not VW..... You just don't get the optional pipe and slippers that you get with the Audi ;)

Paul's correct in that the lwb Passat is sold in China.

Fair enough the Octy may be based on a stretched golf platform , but size wise it competes with the Passat not the Golf.

So getting back to the original question , is there any likelihood of a Golf sized Skoda to fill the gap between the current models?

The closest you can get at the mo is the Fabia estate I suppose.

I doubt it...why would they make an Octavia without a boot, surely people would just as rather buy an Octavia with a boot?

Rob.

Is the Octavia wheelbase actually any longer than a Golf's?

So Dr Zoidberg, is what you want an Octavia with the rear end chopped off, cos since the Octy is the only Skoda built on a Golf chassis, that's what it would have to be ...

I'm pretty sure it's not. Rear legroom is very poor for a car of it's length. The upside is the boot size.

The overhangs are huge on the Octy.

Mark

Wheel-to-wheel (so, yeah, the wheelbase) it matches the Golf.

It's just the body that's about 4 inches longer...

Rob.

Back on topic, I couldn't see Skoda doing a Golf. Market is too crowded. You wanna cheap Golf you go for a Leon.

Back to the A4 - Is it really Passat based? I have a shared driveway with my neighbour and she drives an A4. would swear it's shorter than the Octy... I thought an A4 was a Bora with a flash badge :)

Mark

I thought the Passat was on an A6 chassis, not the A4 ?

This is one confusing thread

Perhaps VAG are getting this platform-sharing thing right after all !If they are confusing us 'enthusiasts' then the normal buying public aren't gonna know that they could have saved 35% by buying the same car with a different badge - are they ?:p
