Can Windscreen Wipers Auto Park when ignition switched off

Featured Replies

Just a quick question regarding the wipers on my Octy.

Is it possible to code the wipers to return to the parked position when the engine is turned off? As you can imagine the reason I am asking this is mine don't. If they are in mid wipe abd i turn the ignition off then they will stay in that position. My Octy has rain sensitive wipers.

However, my wife's A3 of the same vintage with rain sensitive wipers does return to the park position.

Is this just a setting or does it do it by design?

So if the wipers are going full and you switch off the engine etc they simply stop?

I thought they continued to the end of their current wipe and returned to the bottom park position? Sure my Superb does and also my last Octavia did.

That's right they just stop. I thought it was a feature!

It was a feature having two wipers on my base A35. Had a little manual twist thing on top of the screen for the passenger to twiddle.

It is so that you can park them on the screen to change the blades.

You will notice that in the bottom park position the wipers cannot be lifted from the screen as they sit under the back of the bonnet.

To park them for changing the blades put the key in the ignition and hold the wiper stalk down.

The blades will move to vertical and stay there.

What Andy said. Never switched off with them still running but might give it a try and see what happens

Didn't know that one!

Also known as the "service position".

Very handy when washing the car windscreen too.

I think the OP's question was more around the fact that they stop mid cycle when the engine/ignition is switched off, not necessarily about the park/service feature.

Must be able to code that in VCDS, wonder where the options is... will have a hunt if it gets none snowy/icy any time soon.

The service position allows you to lift your blades off the screen pending severe snow or ice.

That's right. I was aware of the park/service feature but I thought the octy was a little more advanced than my old Austin Mini in the electrics department.

I hope it is a setting in VCDS so if any one knows I would appreciate it.

Interesting. What would be good is to get a VCDS scan from the A3 that does this as standard, and have a look for any differences. Would have thought it might be an adaption setting.

OP - are you in a position to hook VCDS to your wife's A3?

Our Octy does the same - the wipers just stop where they were. My A4 returns them to the parked/down position, but the rear wiper stays where it was (knowing Audi you probably have to pay for an option on the car to have the rear wiper go back to it's parked position as well ;) ).

What a cracker, I'll try that and see if the ignition has to be in the 'on' position.

No need for the ignition to be on. You stop, take key out, press stalk within a few seconds and they move to the correct position :)

gotta do it before u open the driver's door.

once u open the door, it won't go into the service position.

good point

How do people clean their cars properly, without knowing about the service position for the wipers? :)

If you forget, you can have the door open, stick key in and flick to Ignition 2, then take the key out - hit the stalk and they'll park in the service position.

That's what I do with them if the car's been parked up, prior to washing.

I was wondering how you were meant to lift the wipers to change them etc...

Clever stuff! lol

Maybe people just hit the wipers then quickly remove the key, if they don't know about it!

More than happy for someone to do a scan of the A3 as I don't have VCDS

I'm sure someone will sort you out, have a look in the VCDS section for someone in your area.

It's a bit far for me to travel ;)

Re: the service position, I have been finding it worth leaving them there overnight anyway, when I remember to.

We are on a fairly busy main road and overnight the blades tend to get assorted crud deposit on them, in the normal parked position.

If instead I leave them vertical, they are immediately "clean" when I start off next day.
