scout v yeti

Featured Replies

swapping my vrs shortly for either a scout or a yeti,,,,,,

just wondering if they both have the exact same 4x4 system as the yeti as an off road button

Also which one will be the most comfy....which ever I pick it will be diesel and manual.

My Scout (2008) has Haldex Generation 2.

The Yeti has Haldex Generation 4.

I'm not sure if the Scout ever got a later version of Haldex from pre-facelift to the current facelifted version?

More info here...

Are you looking at brand new or nearly new? Production of the Scout finished late last year so brand new ones are very thin on the ground. Plenty of nearly new though.

If you are planning to use your new car to transport your horse dog then I'd recommend the Scout, the boot on the Yeti whilst big enough for most is much smaller than the Scout. Coming from an Octavia you'll already know the dog fits in the Scout.

Either option will prove to be expensive, diesel Scout's and Yeti's are big money and both are holding their value very well, which won't be a problem if buying new (aside from Scout availability). It can be a bad time to buy a 4x4 when we are in the grip of winter as dealers know they can sell them and are less likely to discount.

Suprised to see you posting this, your current car seems perfect for you???

Friend has a Yeti, he even complains about the boot and he doesn't have dogs!

I came from an Octavia estate to a yeti and the boot is the biggest thing I miss about the Octy. The yeti is tiny in comparison. Can't comment on 4x4 as I never drive on anything worse than farm tracks and army training areas so I only got a 2WD.

Hi Tony,

The 2012 Scout has, I understand, the 4th generation Haldex. Whether this is the same arrangement as on the Yeti I'm not sure.

Just purchased one of the last new 2.0 Tdi 140 CR Scouts (ex static demonstrator) to replace a 2006 Octy 4x4 and first impressions are very, very favourable. I was a passenger in a Yeti on a climbing trip recently and 3 of us struggled to get our kit in the boot. The space seems high and narrow, so I think your dog would struggle in there. The other thing that surprised me was that the rear seat felt a bit "bench like" and wasn't too comfortable - something you'll probably want to consider for the kids.

That said, there are an awful lot of very happy Yeti owners out there....

Kind Regards

Ian

Agreed on the boot size issue with the Yeti. It takes more planning to make best use of the smaller space.I ended up getting a roofbox which has doubled the space but it can't match the convenience of the cavernous Octy boot. We find the Yeti more comfortable, but comparing a nine year old car with a new one is maybe a little unfair! The extra ride height does make it much easier to get in and out of, and the shorter length makes it more manoeuvrable.

I have the 4x4 DSG Octavia, did look at the Yeti but for what we need the car for it just didn't have the boot room.

The car has coped with all I have asked of it be it snow or muddy fields and tracks.

It's fast and comfortable on long trips, and you already know what the boot space is, but a bit more for the estate.

If I didn't want the space for our hobby we would most likely get the Yeti for the extra seat hight, it helps when you get a bit older and stiffer.

thanks for all the replys looks like its a scout,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

but will have to wait until the new one is out and then bang an order in

Scout....diesel.....xenons....winter pack? and still towing with the idea of dsg again but if you get snow/mud surley the manual

is better......

roll on when the new one comes out no doubt it will take about 26 weeks to come .....

mind you we have waited 19 weeks for wifes citigo.....and still waiting

I've got a '60' reg Scout and I considered the Yeti which was relatively new at the time, and I decided the storage space was not enough with two young kids and clutter after a test drive.

The facelift Scouts get Haldex 4 and are basically the same chassis but with long overhangs at each end and no offroad button so not quite as capable. You still get increased clearance and a sump plate and rough road protection underneath.

Obviously there are differences in the styling, and I was disappointed the CR170 engine isn't available in the Scout, and overall the Yeti felt more modern inside. Otherwise the Scout won hands down. The Yeti is brick-like enough as it is, and with a roof-box on would drink fuel on motorway runs. I would consider a Yeti if Skoda increased the wheelbase and rear overhang a bit to get a decent (bike swallowing) boot.

The CR140 in the Scout is pretty refined and I find (with the possible exception of fast dual-carriageway roundabouts) has enough power/torque for most purposes - it's rarely left embarrassed. The first gear is low - which is excellent offroad, towing, recovery, etc - but slightly tricky for smooth changes in low gears. The xenons are good, although mine needed realigning from new as they were basically pointing at the ground. No winter pack as far as I am aware - I got side curtain airbags, a spare and Alcantara interior and very happy with that. Oh, and the silver roof rails look good on certain colours. If you google 'Satin Grey Octavia Scout' you'll see mine!

I might well be up for a new one when released - there's nothing with the same capability for the price, or even the price plus £10K (suburu, audi allroad, etc).

Take it from me that DSG is not a problem on snow and mud. Remember, you can always put it into manual mode. Having said that, I've never found it necessary in the Yeti.

They are very similar and the offroad button on the Yeti is a bit of an "off roaders idiot button" IMO.

If you can drive offroad you are not really going to need it very often at all.

For me the Scout is better if you like a bigger boot and better economy. With deals they are cheaper too.

But the Yeti is better if you like a higher driving position, a slightly better cabin and a better choice of drivetrains.

I went for the CR170 4x4 Yeti and remapped to 200bhp. It's a hoot.

It's a shame the Scout has such a limited engine choice in 4x4.

We've never had a problem with the boot in the Yeti.

When we go away on holiday (one child) we just pack upwards so the parcel shelf sits propped up a bit.

It's only once a year so it's not an issue. Not needed a roof box yet.

I reckon it'll be next year (at the earliest) before we see the Scout version of the MkIII Octavia here in the UK...

Like all the others here, I also bought the Scout over the Yeti for the boot space. The missus will say we bought the Scout over the Yeti for aesthetics too.

We test drove a Yeti, but with two kids and a dog its boot space just wasn't enough, only really managed to fit the buggy in the boot and that was it! I also didn't find the Yeti as nice to drive as the Scout, but I wonder if that's just because I drove a 1.6TDI Yeti, which felt a little underpowered. Either way, it would be a Scout for me. Although I've often thought I would be happy to have a Yeti as a second car, or once the kids are a bit older and you have less luggage to haul around.

The Scout MK III was due out in the Summer of this year, at about the same time as the VRS is released.

Interesting groundhog, I had 5 octavias before the yeti. I agree the boot would have been a deal breaker when our son was using a buggy, but now he's out of that the yeti is a far more entertaining car to drive. And mine's a 1.2 tsi. Lots more fun than my 2.0 Octavia.

It's the least perky one in the whole range and Front Wheel Drive only.

In my opinion if you are going to compare the Scout and Yeti then you need to test a 4x4 Yeti as it has more power and a more planted feel on the road.

As said, same Haldex generation 4 setup with the FL Scout as the Yeti. Same ground clearance but much shorter overhangs on the Yeti. The boot space of the Scout is far better and in this respect I miss my previous Octy BUT you can get a lot into the Yeti if its packed well - its adequate for our three up five week summer holiday - the flexibility of the interior making up big ground on any lack of outright boot space. Dont forget that you can slide, recline/tilt and totally remove the rear seats in three sections - just removing one seat gives you a large square space! Its more comfortable on a run and more fun in the twisties and the interior is a nicer place to be, being slightly higher with a more commanding view out.

Pffft you boys and your 4x4s :giggle:

Its just a much fairer/similar comparison imo. :)

The current Scouts a cracking car

Only downside I can see to the new one is its going to be a bigger car

Perhaps it was just on the short test drive we had. We were actually considering a 1.4TSI that they had in the showroom, but could only test drive the 1.6TDI at that time. All I remember was I was really looking forward to having a test drive in one, but afterwards felt a bit let down. In the end we replaced our Scout with another Scout!

And no doubt more expensive!

Sarge.

The Scout MK III was due out in the Summer of this year, at about the same time as the VRS is released.

I'll be suprised if the Scout is only 6 months after the launch of the MkIII.

The MkII hit the UK shores in 2004, the Scout didn't arrive until three years later in 2007, whereas the vRS was only two years behind.

Maybe the MkII Scout was a late addition, and the MkIII has been planned from the outset which may see it arrive quicker?

And no doubt more expensive!

Sarge.

That is a certainty.

The main attraction of the Scout for me was how much car you got for your money.

Unfortunantly so have a lot of others.

The days of cheap Skoda's are over, thankfully the days of good Skoda's are not!
