As titled escpecially after just coming out of gear and try to engage reverse and when on a little hill of sorts even worse is this another Fabia common fault

Could be the clutch not clearing.

I had a similar problem selecting reverse gear and it was fixed by adjusting the gear linkage . All sweet now.

Mines getting worse 1st and second in this cold weather. Im Sure it will be ok again once the temp gets up a bit. Not sure why cold should affect it because im sure gearbox oil and transmittion fluid should go down to much lower than this although it might start to alter the viscosity at lower range especially on older oils. It goes in to the gear it just sometimes requires a double clutch and it feels notchy if that makes sense.

What mileage is the car on?

First thing is to check the gear linkage.

There are a couple of common problems.

One is the linkage just slipping out of alignment and is just a matter of following a guide to reset it.

The other could be the lever on top is loose (this happened to me). This can either be fixed with a new linkage (gearbox off) or, as my local VAG garage did is to put a couple of washers under it to tighten it up.

Also check gaiter tag (inside gaiter); it comes off and jams.
