Decision Made - and Yeti keeps 70% value as P/X

Featured Replies

In another thread or two there are a number of contributors who are mulling over making a change before the three-year ownership anniversary arrives. As there are a good many approaching that time quite apart from those who write on Briskoda it may well be that the trade-in value, which up until now has been amazingly good, will begin to slide.

I've been mulling over this scenario for a few weeks, unable to stop dithering - wondering about being out of warranty, wondering about part-exchanging, wondering about going from a completely reliable and brilliant car to one that raises anxiety levels and blood-pressure, and wondering if in the future it would be possible to fund the difference to a new car with any kind of ease of mind!

Well this week my 52k 2year 10 month old 170 Elegance went in for a service - and there, in the showroom, was the cancelled order of my dreams! I crawled all over it, ascertained the spec, drooled a bit, and came home a bit despondent. Then I started thinking, and plotting, and sending emails to the sales guy.

And today I signed on the dotted line as I agreed to acquire the Candy White Superb Elegance 170 4*4 with heated front screen, tow-bar preparation, wooden fittings, and one or two extras. In exchange they agreed to relieve me of my aged, and little used indulgence, aka BMW Z4. They also were delighted to take over my Yeti, complete with its spare summer shoes - and in so doing valued it at 67% of its original value. I find that astonishing, given my mileage, but satisfying.

So, next month, I will pressgang a buddy to convoy down with me in delivering both my vehicles, and I will collect what is, really, an ideal car for my needs. Decent engine, economy, loads of room, and a load-bay with more than enough space for all my band kit. I might miss the ride height; I might miss the "go-kart-ness" of the Yeti; I might miss being able to remove rear seats - but that'll be about it, I think. As a mate said "that Superb is more a George-mobile"!

Pleased?? - you bet. I've MADE a decision!

Congrats on the new motor, not a fan of the superb myself, but it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.

Enjoy and stay safe.

Hi George,

hope you stay around as an honorary member of the Monster club

Nice motor the Superb, my dad's on his third (two Mk I's and a MkII 170 DSG). Although they are nice to drive, I find them far to long for my tastes personally but for carrying kit their hard to beat and a great long distance cruiser.

Not sure if I missed it in your post but saloon or estate :wonder: and I would be interested in your thoughts in comparison to the Yeti.

Enjoy the new motor,

Tim.

Yes congratulations, keep us informed of how you get on, mpg compared to the yeti would be interesting.

Showing my ignorance here but is the 4x4 superb the same as the scout?

if so it has got an enormous boot!

Well I never!!

Well done George.

Hope you'll stick around here though.

And I'm due to go down their next month!! MOT and a warranty job.

Another yeti to Superb ...did exactly that a couple of months ago ..still getting used to it

Nice cars for sure.

I just don't need the space and like to sit higher up, but I can see the appeal.

(and the Yeti is better driven briskly  )

I bet the Superb will depreciate quicker though.

Was that the white superb 4x4 estate in the showroom at Sinclair's in Swansea ?

If so, i saw that this afternoon looks very nice indeed.

Every good wish, George.

Enjoy it.

That's the one! And as ever in my dealings with the Sinclair crew it was simply a delight from start to finish.

And to a previous question - yes, it's an estate.

...more than enough space for all my band kit...

Band? Enough room for an orchestra in there! Drop in and see us sometime :hi:

The Superb estate 4x4 is a great car. I think the boot is actually smaller than the Octavia/Scout estate, I seem to remember, as it is a narrower car surprisingly, from what I remember (but could be wrong).

I was originally after the Superb and was going to buy one until I realised the Yeti was then available with the 4x4 & DSG.

For me, the Yeti is better, as parking it in London so much easier due to it being 2 feet shorter.

(there are plenty of other reasons, but that will do for here)

I no longer need the boot space of my old Octavia.

Well I be never as well!!!

Now you say "complete with spare summer shoes"... please tell me you are not selling the Yeti with its extra set of winter tyres on!? OR do you just change rubber? Because you know a set of winter wheels for a Yeti will also fit a Superb and be as useful in bad weather!?

Enjoy the new Yeti Freshacre, it'll be hard 'prizing you out' at the end of the day. :D

Enjoy the new SUPERB ESTATE Freshacre, it'll be hard 'prizing you out' at the end of the day. :D

I've corrected that for you, Mac!!:giggle:

My Yeti has Conti Winters on the standard 17" alloys, and I get the rubber changed when it needs it!

My Superb has 18" rims!!

Ah ok...

I'd still have the summer rubber put back on and sell the winter ones on here to some Yeti folk, than to just give it to a dealer!!! Unless he is paying you.

My Superb has 18" rims!

Oh heck! - stand by for the flaming from the 16" evangelists! :)

Sounds like a good spec - stay around please?

Yep - will do! There are bound to be some stories of Welsh farm collies getting used to a ginormous Superb Estate wafting around the lanes, getting browner by the day, though I expect that driving a salubrious machine like the Superb I will probably be approaching every single dollop and faecal skid mark on the road like a slalom course in order to avoid splattering the pristine paintwork.

In this whole exercise, which seems to have been decreed by fate, it has been the trade in value of the Yeti that has genuinely surprised and gratified me.

And now I've found that my old farmer neighbour covets the Beemer! He's old and wrinkled and has a smelly crusty sheepdog and he wants to buy the thing. Wonders never cease. (probably wants it for £10.59 and a ten pee bit back as luck money).

George.

I might be interested in the winter tyres.

Never! Each to his own, we say!

George.

I might be interested in the winter tyres.

They're on the ruddy car. Its winter.

And.....I'm sure our friends at Sinclairs will swop them back for your summers they are storing for you. :giggle:

George.

I might be interested in the winter tyres.

I can remember a time when you were dead against the idea of winter tyres, Graham - and said so on a number of occasions. What's changed your mind?

PS. You told me I had the wrong oil in the other thread....haven't heard back from you on that one?

What's changed my mind?

Don't know, just decided it might be a good idea. However I still might go down the Vector route

Oil info was as written in my Handbook.
