Snow socks - had to laugh

Featured Replies

Maybe next week again for some ice in Aberdeen,

I am off up to Oban, Fort William & Mallaig and it looks like a chance of some snow come the Weekend.

Going over 'The Rest & Be Thankful' on Wednesday with the vRS, Dunlop Summers and just my C'0'ck Sock.

  • At least he had them on the correct wheels, last winter I saw a woman with them on the FRONT of a 1 series BM

  • These were seen 2 years ago. "But that's what it shows on the picture on the packet."

  • +1 I was really annoyed that I only got around 15K miles out of my Nokian’s before I sold them…. with 6mm+ left on them, they were also just over half the price of my 18’s.

SWMBO had to leave her 1 series and walk home on Friday. She doesn't need winter tires or snow socks apparently since all she has to do is walk home and I go and fetch it later.

When we had those good winters a couple of years ago I was parked at Cairngorm skiing..........was in the car having my lunch...............stupid woman in a french car with a folding hard top tried to reverse into the space infront of my car. Thing is this space is "uphill".....failed !!...................so stopped in middle the "road" in the carpark and tried to fit her snow socks..............failed as she had to go forward to "fit " the socks.............but that would have meant hitting my car. I had seen her faffing around so had got out to watch my car was not getting hit.............

Ended up pushing her car into the space.................and I'd only just had a minor op on my back 2weeks before!!!!.............STUPID fecking women and stupid feching snow socks!...............fit winters or don't drive!!!

Although the Which vid says driven wheels only, just look at the difference in cornering, if your car is rwd you NEED 2 pairs. The presenter also had difficulty fitting them because she drove forwards too far - 1/2 a wheel rotation and they would have gone straight on.

I am willing to be that she would have cracked it if she has done a few practise tries first.

Braking - remember 80% of the brake force is through the front wheels, if they dont have socks you are relying on the 20% available through the rear wheels - not good!!

Ré 30 mph, this is the maximum speed rating for the socks, perhaps someone REALLY needs to RTFM.

As for the mumsnet comment, as men cannot easily breastfeed, I take over burping, nappy changes etc,; as soon as the wife has finished the feed, so she can get some rest. Heidi is in the "cluster feeding" stage, so she wants to feed roughly every 1-1.5 hours during the night!!

Perhaps if any woman is stupid enough to have children with you, you might understand.

I think she cracked it quite well.

Probably the kind that RTFM, RTFF's, RTFIN, then screws the nut and uses some common sense.

(possibly stays off the brakes & uses engine braking,

which in the case with FWD or the RWD and socks on, where it will come from the rear.

she will probably know to forget what men say about percentages because they often think they are above average.)

I did find a woman stupid enough once, that was the trouble, she was too stupid so I chopped her in for one who didn't spend her time watching Trisha, the current one is much better :whew: . Got a daughter who's thirteen now, thankfully she has my brains ;)

And your point is?

Oh yeah forgot, nobody is allowed to have a different opinion to you.

on the contrary, I'm always keen to learn and welcome opinions that differ from my own, it's just that some opinions I take with a larger helping of salt than others ;)

:D

what a bell end! Once he's on the tarmac they'll be useless and fit only for the bin in under 5 miles.

Clue is in first line "I was behind a BMW" .

If you want to breastfeed, you are NOT supposed to introduce a bottle in the first 3 months - which is what you have to do if expressing the milk.

I have been a dad AND a Nursery Nurse for over 20 years.

Re Fort William - Mallaig - you should have tried that in snow about twenty or more years ago -it was good fun ,especially in RWD cars . One year a snow plough was sent . It ended up in ditch, whilst the locals skated round it .

AutoExpress also have a review video of Auto socks (and chains and that spray on gunk), V winter tyres.

They conclude that the Auto socks act JUST the same as a good set of winter tyres, but are cheaper and easier to get on or off.

I would post the link, but I cant be arsed.

Right you lot, RWD cars socks on drive wheels or all wheels...... FUBAR's approach to this conundrum is to just go to the autosock.co.uk web site and click on FAQ and BINGO!

Q10 I have a rear wheel drive. Do I need AutoSock on the front wheels as well?

You don't need them, but it obviously makes sense to fit AutoSock to the steering wheels as well as to the driving wheels, because the car will then travel in the direction you intend! Because the weight moves towards the front of the car under braking - brake gently on snow! - this is all the more important.

A reminder to BMW owners to check their rear wheel size...

So I win you pack of lady dogs :p You don't have to have them but would be offer an advantage (and more profits for AutoSock)

You dont NEED to slow down on a thick snow/fog covered motorway, there is no law stopping you, but just like not fitting socks to the front of a rwd car, you would rightly be called an idiot if you didnt.

The website say

Right now I am looking at you the same way I look at 4x4 drivers who think that - just because they have more traction than a 2wd car - they suddenly have the ability to steer or stop better than a 2wd car.

Cavéat - if you just want them to get a few meters off of a patch of snow, then fine, but then the spray on stuff would also work, be cheaper and is easier to apply.

I didnt even know about this spray on stuff before i bought my socks otherwise i probsbly would have bought some of that instead. As you say i only intend on using my socks if i get totally stuck. The rest of the time i will just drive according tot he conditions on my summers. Paying off so far as yet again the snow has barely casued my any issues so far.

I am not convinced the spray is cost effective, how long does a can last??

At £15 a can, it only takes 3-4 cans worth before a pair of socks are cheaper; and as I mentioned before, I have had my socks since 2006 and done perhaps 100 miles on them.

I beleive the NHS ambulance service in Cumbria use snow socks as opposed to spray on stuff so i guess it must be more cost effective.? But then again the NHS is famous for wasting money.

You can argue the snow socks are cheaper than spray on chain both ways. If you keep the same motor long enough to go though 4 or 5 cans of spray then socks would be cheaper, but if you chop the motor in every other year, need the extra grip maybe twice a year, and need new socks for different size tyres every time you change, then the spray will be cheaper.

So clearly socks are cheaper for a high mileage user in Cunbria, but I'd reckon the spray to be cheaper hereabouts where it's a hard Winter if it snows enough to lie twice.

The socks fit a range of tyre sizes, I have changed car twice (so three different cars), and still have the same socks; I have also lent them to my mum for her "old" BMW 523 - they dont fit her newer Merc "E" Class though.

Never heard of the spray on stuff either. Might invest in a few cans of it to keep for emergencies. However I am a total winter tyre convert. I had always managed on standard tyres, but in 2010 the snow was so bad I decided to get some. Really noticed the difference for our chaotic week, especially compared to the wifes car. Now just got to save up to get her a set!
