How much ?! Turbo woes: Updated.

Featured Replies

Started the car earlier to go out, pulled away as always however... No power and Im guessing it was the police siren of death.

What kind of prices am I looking at for new/refurb turbo ? Upgrading probably out of the question sadly.

Also, anyone know any decent places in Edinburgh/West Lothian area ? Dont fancy seeing dealer prices for a new turbo.

On another note, car hit 60k miles tonight :giggle: .

Update 31/1/12: As suspected turbo has imploded.... And showered the engine with bits. It might be getting covered under warranty, but that's up in the air for now. There is politics in the way, that I won't get into until it is settled. I will say, however, it can only be a good thing that Chathams are out of business :bandit: .

Who want's to guess what preliminary figures are for this repair  ?

Bad luck iann.

When mine was "on the way out" my research found prices of around £600 for a brand new garrett pd130 turbo.

Fitting was then a further £300 on top of that.

In the end I just bought a second hand kkk turbo from a member on here for £130.

Cheers for the reply. Knew I was probably looking at the wrong side of £500, but never thought I could be looking at nearer a grand.

How much more would an upgraded be? And can you run them on the standard map ok, or would I definitely need a remap?

Going to have to done some thinking when I get in from uni.

The Garrett is a stronger and more relaiable option than the KKK option so is technically an upgrade in some ways.

I think you can get a Garrett PD150 for about £100 more which would run "ok" on a standard map but would indeed need a remap to get the best out of it.

You'd probably want to consider speaking to a tuner about fitting it and get them to include a remap in the price.

Also if you do get a bigger turbo you'd probably need to upgrade to a FMIC to avoid chronic heat soak....adding another £500 to the bill

Just dont let it actually blow up into your engine

My bill was 2k after that happened to me.

Get it changed pal

Personally if i could turn back time i would of scrapped the brand new £700 garret unit and gone to darkside developments and gave the £1200 for a bigger turbo, full manifold and exhaust

Bargin

that bit is a bargain but when you have to add a FMIC, and a new clutch to the shopping list that cost soon doubles in price!

where as i repaired my car back to it's previous (standard) health for less than £500

And then you have to add insurance again on top of these costs. Being 23 and having no no claims now. (No accidents though, just had to sacrifice previous 'Named driver no claims' from the co-op to insure the vRS as they would not cover it).

Shouldnt have done any damage other than turbo, only ran a couple of miles (had to \; ) with it whining.

Running with bigger turbo on standard map, Im guessing isnt advised and only 'ok' for a the short term? As in, couldn't/shouldn't go a country lane blast with it?

Funds are limited, and probably subject to a loan from the Bank of Parents as well, so probably be going down your route Pasty, however, unsurprisingly my head has worries about a used turbo. 60k miles isn't a lot for a 7 year old car really, so don't imagine there will be many for sale with less mileage. I know that's a good indicator, but having one pop that low has affected my view.

Luckily though, don't actually NEED the car for the foreseeable so it can sit while I get in contact with garages/tuners and get prices.

Didn't mean to type so much, but as you can imagine, not a particularily happy bunny with the car :wall:

Oh, and it's still under the Approved used warranty, will phone up the dealer, but somehow, I think I'll be told where to go, in the politest of terms.

I'd get it checked to make sure it is the turbo before investigating too far.

It'd seem a shame to spend a massive amount of cash replacing something that wasn't broken!

When my turbo went pop the car just stopped completely and wouldn't start again, (as the impellor wouldn't turn so no air could get to the engine) so i'm not sure if your's starts and runs but has no power it's the turbo?

Have you checked your boost pipes? Limp mode? etc

Unfortuantely the turbos are a lottery.

My red car has run through 127,000 miles, 80k of which have been remapped, and it's not had a single problem.

The black car has been through 2 turbos within 50k.

The way i looked at it with the bill being £450ish to repair i could afford to go through 2 and a half second hand turbos for the price of a brand new one.

  • Author

Oh yes, it'll definitely be getting checked that is the problem before any serious money is spent. My mind is just in overdrive with it right now.

Not definite that is turbo, but I reckon it is turbo related, not nesecarily total failure. VERY loud mechanical whining noise (as said with other failures, police siren-esque sound) that coincides with how the turbo would spool, so it is spinning.

Bearings probably collapsed and the fins are now running on the casing...do not drive further it's a ticking time bomb of when it's gonna spit the fins if it hasn't already!

Get it somewhere for diag asap...but have it towed lol

So, am I getting false hope in my head or, is the bearing replaceable for much less than a new turbo or is it one of those parts that are in built and need a whole new unit?

And to update: Phoned dealer, probably going to phone skoda assist, see if they will give a tow to dealer and get a diagnostic done.

Bearing is integral to the turbo, new unit would be needed.

If Skoda UK covered it with their used warranty I would insist they replace it, take it further if needed.

  • Author

Aaaaand it's gone. The car that is. Phoned skoda assist, came out within half an hour, rev'd it a couple times. "Yep, turbo. Should be covered under warranty, however I cant specifically say." Also getting sorted with a replacement car for 48hours as of tomorrow.

So it's away to Chatham/West End in Sighthill for a diagnostic, will know more from then. Weight off the mind slightly being told it should be covered.

result

  • Author

Maybe a result have to see what their final diagnosis is. Garage called today to tell me no compression on Cylinder 3 (I think, bad line). Needed to OK to open up further for a look, won't know more till probably tomorrow now.

I have very limited technical knowledge about engines, so no idea if that would be related to turbo failure or not.

I've had quotes of £340 plus VAT for standard pd130 garretts

OP updated. Probably going to miss some sleep tonight. If it's not covered, I have no idea what the next move is yet. Tomorrow will be interesting, but to lighten to the mood, who wants to guess the figure the possible warranty work is estimated at for now ?

Wouldn't it be running rough as a bag of spanners if it had lost compression on a cylinder ? It would be running on three.

Wouldn't catch me agreeing to do any more, compression testers are ten a penny, check it yourself.

I hate garages for that reason, never know whether they are trying it on or not, if they are a wildcard at least. Do you know them well ?

At least go to someone you can trust. I spoke to Unit18 about the possibility of my turbo failing, worse come to worst I can have it carted over there and I would find ways around the lack of transport in meanwhile

  • Author

It was barely running when it was towed in, rough would be a compliment.

It is diagnosed as Turbo failure. Parts of the turbo have found their way into the cylinder damaging the piston and valves, assuming that has lead to lack of compression.

I don't know the garage, as such, but due to a recent take over, me + the father have been dealing with the guy who is overseeing the claim. Do feel like we are in safe hands with him, so yes, I'd say trusted to be talking straight.

Engine is out and sitting on the floor, got to have a quick look at it. cant see any impellors on the turbo on (i think exhaust) side

ouchy

I guess was lucky that mine siezed completely meaning all the bits stayed within the housing or got caught up in my gunky intercooler (I knew that weepy EGR was really a good thing :D)

your might have just been turning building pressure and thus forcing bits of impellor into the engine

bad times indeed

I reckon the bill will be into 4 figures at least :(

  • Author

A very lucky man indeed. It is a 4 figure price.

Here's a clue: intercooler has been included in the price :whew: .

(I'm sure that's what he said).

I do count myself incredibly lucky that it wasn't worse, and that I had a spare turbo in the garage AND that i could get the replacement fitted at family rates by my VW master tech cousin.

We did discuss what he's have to charde if they did this on the books at the dealer while we were wiping shard filled gunk out of my intercooler and pipework he said that the only way they could do it and offer any kind of warranty would be to replace EVERYTHING!

I feel your pain

Relief has flooded me! Will end up paying about £500, as warranty will only cover 6k or so worth of work.

Also getting a diesel fabia instead of the rental. Today was a good news day,

£6k - are they replacing the car whole?

Certainly sounds like a new block and blow, possible intercooler and some pipework plus main dealer prices!

It'll be like a brand new car man
