Leak inside car / Petrol smell

Featured Replies

Hi

My first post here, as a new Skoda owner.

I have picked up an 2002 Octavia 1.6 Petrol and it has a couple of things that are annoying me.

Firstly, there is a wet patch on the inside of the car at the top of the nearside A pillar, particularly noticeable this morning after a lot of overnight rain. I have noticed as well that the rear windscreen washer does not work (although you can hear the pump working), but I don't think these pipes run through this location, so I don't think this is the cause of the leak?

Secondly, I am getting a petrol/ oil smell coming through into the car when the engine has warmed up and it is sat in traffic. When you drive along it is not noticeable. It's been to a local garage twice about this and they say there is nothing more they can do - they have replaced a breather pipe, spark plugs and the dip stick tube which was split. They said they have checked all other pipes and all seemed fine. Any ideas what else it could be?

Thanks!

Either a poorly fitted windscreen, or leaks via the roof rail securing points

Check in the boot under the CD changed mounting point as there is a joint in the rear washer pipe there and it is known to pop apart. Also try operating the rear wiper when stationary and check that water does not pour out on the ground near to the washer bottle.

Oily smell - sounds like there is still a split pipe or something not connected as it should be.

Water leak - You don't say which trim the car is, but it's also possible that you have a blocked or detached sunroof drain (if fitted).

Rear wiper - Mbames didn't say, but the joint he refers to is in the LHR wing box between the wheel arch and the light cluster.

Oily smell - possible weep on back of cam cover, or engine or gearbox over-filled? Is the scuttle seal at the back of the engine bay present and correctly fitted?

Thanks for the replies..

The model is Ambiente, no sunroof. the leak seems to be coming down from the roof, rather than up from the windscreen, so I suspect it might be roof rail securing points. I guess I will need to remove these from the roof and have a look.

Will check where you suggest to sort out the rear wiper washer

I did remove the nearside scuttle panel to have a look at the pollen filter, what is the scuttle seal - just the rubber seal along the top of the engine bay? The car has had a new head gasket, coil pack, spark plugs and cam belt in the last couple of months, so maybe something didnt get put back together properly. I think I might have to try another garage for this one, I'm not a mechanic so dont really know what I'm looking for!

thanks

Yeah; you've got the right seal. Also, with the new head gasket, there's a possibility that the head bolts need re-torqued. You'll need a torque wrench, and a manual to get the correct torque and tightening order to to those. Or there may just be a seep of oil from the cam cover (under the black plastic one the dipstick pokes through.

well i think i put the seal back on correctly, but surely the smell shouldn't be there in the first place?

I don't really know much about tightening up the head bolts, but at least that gives me something to mention to a garage. I will have a look for any oil I can see seeping too.

cheers
