My EGR paranoia

Featured Replies

I have looked and although there are a few threads on here, I think these questions have not been asked.

I am at 115000 miles on my vrs tdi and am developing an Egr valve paranoia!

I have most receipts and the egr looks to be the factory original.

I also read on the net claims of anything from 3-5mpg to 20% added to mpg by deleting the Egr. If I could do this cheaply, it will be well worth it, as I spend up to £400 per month in diesel, any mpg improvement would be welcome.

As I understand, there are two methods.

1. A blanking plate

2. Complete removal.

Both require reprogramming to ignore by the car.

I wondered what the difference with the above 2 methods is in terms of will one make more of a difference to mpg/performance/longevity than the other, or is one better for the car (I read one person makes blanking plates from a beercan for golf tdi's!).

One method requires fitting new pipework etc and I guess there is a reason for the pipework over the beercan!

Now is this a DIY job?

I think if it is no harm, I would prefer the blanking plate as it then looks untouched should the Egr become an mot requirement or I come to sell the car etc.

If DIY is an option (and also bearing in mind that a fault reader seems like an essential bit of kit) would the following allow me to electronically delete the egr?

If not, and bearing in mind costs, what would?

It's suprising how many people including tuners think that EGR delete makes the engine perform better when in most cases it's quite the opposite.

I havent noticed any long term mpg gains since removing the EGR.

The engine appears to be smoother revving and more responsive though.

If you go down either route the car needs remapping to ignore the EGR.

You can easily disable the egr by removing the vacuum pipe and plugging its end. The engine management light will come on - if it bothers you put some tape over it.

I ran mine like this for a few thousand miles with no problems - and noticed NO difference in performance or economy.

Our local garage removed stripped and cleaned it for about 50 quid.

Looking at it a clean EGR doesnt seem to pose much resistance to air flow, so there's no reason why it should.

I doubt there would be an increase in mpg over stock.

You may find the claims being made are from the results of owners who have deleted egr when their stock one became clogged/faulty, which then lost a litle mpg. ;)
