Water pump and shocks questions (1.9 tdi greenline)

Featured Replies

Well its been a long time since i've posted here! Mainly due to not having any real problems with my superb in the 3 years i have it and the fact that its the missus who drives it 5 days a week ( grumble, grumble)

Just got the Superb services today (56k km) and thought all was fine until i went into to collect it and they told me there were 2 jobs that needed doing ASAP but i thought i'd ask independent experts first.

1) Water pump is "weeping", cost to repair €294 (£250ish)

This to me seems rather high. A quick search online and i could source a pump made by bugatti or hepu for < €60 delivered on its own. So is weeping serious? should it be replaced in conjunction with any belts? I've noticed i've had to top up the coolant a couple of times in the last year, is this what is leaking out of it?

2) Front Left shock absorber, cost to repair €213 (£180 )for one, €355 (£305 ) for both at same time. They actually said this didnt need to be done as immediately as the water pump. I cant say i've noticed it being bad while driving.

Any thought or advice?

The car is out of warranty now so definetly thinking of looking elsewhere to get this work done for cheaper. Even when i was putting it in for a service i was thinking to myself that it might be the last time i go to a dealer.

If you're replacing the water pump you should probably do the timing belt too as the water pump is an idler for that belt (at least it is on the BKD so I'm assuming the same for your engine).

What did they say was wrong with the shock absorbers? Decayed seals, leaking, noisy, weak? This is a safety item if it's not working properly and will affect steering and braking.

The water pump doesn't sound that urgent if its just weeping. It may be dripping a little bit when its Spinning at full speed, but it doesn't need be done tomorrow (or maybe that's just me, having too many classics :D ) it might even be that its not the water pump at fault, its actually the gasket. I don't know what the Superb's water pump is made of, but most water pumps are metal, and its very difficult for metal to leak. If its plastic, however, it could have cracked if you've had a cold winter.

I wouldn't say any belts would need to be changed, unless you are getting near the mileage when the timing belt should be changed.

You may not feel that the shocks are worse than they used to be because they'll slowly get worse, which makes it hard to notice from driving.

Dobbey

If you change a water pump you never ever put an old belt back on. The belts not expensive in its own but it has to he taken off to change the water pump if its belt driven. So whilst its off doing the pump the its best to replace it.
