Winter tyres/steel wheels

Featured Replies

My R3 has 204/45 x 16s. I've seen winter tyre/wheel combos offered as 195/55 x 15 on 6J rims. Has anyone fitted 15s? The front discs look so big I wonder if there'd be a problem with them fouling the smaller wheels.

John

I've put 15" on our 2007 Scout. However for that 195/55 15 aren't approved, though they are fine on all others, only 185/55/15s are OK on the Scout according to Skoda. My Scout normally has 205/45/16" alloys.

I would have thought that 15" steels would fit over the 288mm standard brakes in fact wait there a minute>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes 15” will go over 288mm front brakes, you need 16” for the 312’s though.

To the OP. If you are anywhere near the midlands, I do have a set of 195/55/15 winters. Not a top make by any stretch but still better than summers. Used for 1 winter last year on my previous car, and only fitted to the roomy for a week until I found they weren't allowed on a Scout. Let me know if you want me to check the brand and tread depth.

I'm in the deep south, but a kind thought and I thank you for it.

Many thanks to everyone for the info.

I usually fit 195/55 15" x 15" summer tyres with alloy rims. My winter set is 185/60 x 15" on cheap and dirty :giggle: black steel rims.

I recommend winter tyres with narrow section (more grip and penetration on snowy or icy grounds) and thicker shoulder (better comfort on country roads). A set of second hand black steel rims is cheaper and less delicate than your beloved shiny alloys and you can mistreat them with no mercy on salty tarmacs. Plus, both sets are ready to be fit and you can do it yourself any time.

PS- Obviously they do not interfere with the front 288mm disc brakes

I wonder why they would say 185/55 is ok and not 195/55 - as they are both 15 inch and would not affect the brakes differently.

My summers are 195/55/15 and winters 185/60/15 with a circumference variation of +0.9 inch, and I haven't noticed any adverse effects.

the circumference variation from the 205/45/16 to the recommended 185/55/15 is -1.2 inch, while a 195/55/15 would only be +0.6 inch

Is is because of the extra plastics around the wheel arch on the Scout? Would you possibly not be able to fit snow chains over them?

accepted tyre sizes for Roomster in my post in the tech section..

Yes, that's what caused me the problem. It's not right for the Scout according to Skodas official info. They are very specific that the Scout is different. This is what they say for the Scout 1.9tdi:

185/55 R15 - 85H 6J x 15H2

185/55 R15 - 86H 6J x 15H2

205/45 R16 - 83W 6.5J x 16H2

205/45 R16 - 87W (V) 6.5J x 16H2

205/40 R 17 - 84W 7J x 17H2

Whereas except Scout lists for the 1.9tdi:

185/55 R15 - 85H 6J x 15H2

185/55 R15 - 86H 6J x 15H2

195/55 R15 - 85H 6J x 15H2

205/45 R16 - 83W 6.5J x 16H2

205/45 R16 - 87W (V) 6.5J x 16H2

I don't think it's to do with the plastic either. There's loads of clearance, and the difference between a 185 and 195 is very small.

I have a set of skoda steel wheels from my old octy 1 with 195/65 15 winter tyres on. Does any one know what the effect to speedo , handling etc will be if i put them on my Roomster which has 195 55 x 15's on it ?

I have 15" alloys and 195/55R15 winter tires (Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8) on my Scout MY 2014 with 1.2 TSI and DSG.

Front brakes seems to be kinda big but it still fits perfectly. Here's few pictures:

While I've never tried the 195/65, I have used 195/60 for a short while and they really filled out the wheel arches nicely. But with that one being only 3.3% larger than standard, I wonder if something 6.5% larger could comfortably fit in there.

Hi Lowedb, I've sent a message, I'd love to buy your wheels if you still have them.

bryanb, as in my PM to you the tyres are long gone, sorry.

To follow up on the other point. It was never that the 195s didn't fit the Scout, they were on and fine. It's only that they weren't on the approved list from Skoda, so I would have invalidated my insurance. They were fine for all models other than the Scout. It could be the list in the workshop manual is wrong, but as it's the only bit of official data from Skoda, I wasn't prepared to risk it.

I have put the 195/55x15's on the Roomster which fit ok. They really fill the arches ! Drives well, speedo reads 3 mph slower than it did on correct size, according to roadside speed sign I pass through on way to work

....Should say 195/65 x 15 above.

Hi,

We have also got a Skoda roomster 1.9tdi with 204-45-16 tyres. Would these rims work ok? Rim type 5-hole steel wheel

Size 6 x 15

Bolt pattern 5 x 100.00 x 57.00

Offset 43.00

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/skw.pl

I've also emailed Skoda to ask them as well.

Cheers

Jlo.
