Sealant `v` Wax

Featured Replies

A couple of questions here, if I may:

I don't use my car very much...maybe 2 or 3 times a week, so I only clean it about once every 3 to 4 weeks.

Now, I always snow foam it before I wash...Question `One` - Is that too often?

I have both AGEGP which, as you know is a `Sealant`, and Coll` 845, a Wax.

The last time I cleaned the car I finished with the 845, so my Question `Two` is - can, the next time I clean the car, finish with the AGEGP?

The reason I pose this question is because I understand you should not put a Sealant on top of a wax (though the other way round is okay).

I do hope I haven't made this too complicated.

Many thanks.

Mike.

The solvents in EGP will strip the wax, thats why its ok to put wax on top of it and not vice versa

845 will outperform EGP in every way if you want a quick top up product to apply after washing rather than a full re-wax think about a quick detailer

Thank you, Rich.

So, I should `Wash`, `Light spray with QD while still wet` (to avoid the dreaded water marks), `Dry`, ` a coat of EGP` and finish with `845`.

And you think that would be okay each and every time I do the car? (I do enjoy doing it)

And what about the `Snow foam` would you say its okay to do that each time also?

Many thanks.

Mike.

So its wash , dry and wax with colli 845 or wash , dry and finish with EGP or wash , dry and go over with a detailer if it doesnt really need a wax

If you do want to use EGP and then wax i'd leave it a good few hours in between

Quick detailer will leave a nice shiny finish and "top" up wax or other protection

The Meguirers on that Halfords do is ok but there are much better ones available mail order

As for snow foam , if its too strong it will strip wax so I only ever use it when the car really needs it, so its a judgement call really. Of course if you are going to re-wax anyhow then it doesnt matter but if you arent just make sure you dont make it too strong 1/2-1" in the bottom of the bottle is fine

Mike..You really dont need AGEGP at all if using Collinite

Wash your car every day if you want..Makes no difference..Top up the gloss with a QD every second wash

Strip back and repolish every 6 months or earlier

Wax top up every 8 weeks

So its wash , dry and wax with colli 845 or wash , dry and finish with EGP or wash , dry and go over with a detailer if it doesnt really need a wax

VP pH neutral Snow Foam is LSP safe....Only ever use a maximum of 1" as you say

Thank you, Rich and Chris...as always, very helpful.

One final point...

I have only ever used a QD as a drying aid, but reading the directions on the container it says that it can also be used `in between washes`. Aren't you then just asking to introduce scratches?

That's why I always wash the car before I do anything else.

ALWAYS wash first or youll scratch your paint

ALWAYS wash first or youll scratch your paint

That's what I thought. Thanks, Chris.

Yes what he said, i dont know why they say that

What's the best for stripping previous products?

Farecla Detox wash followed by a Fairy Liquid wash with a liberal spray of All Purpose Cleaner after that.... then rinse

Farecla Detox wash followed by a Fairy Liquid wash with a liberal spray of All Purpose Cleaner after that.... then rinse

NEVER Fairy liquid it's got loads of salt in it!

the kit I use on my impreza is the Blackfire Wet Ice Over Fire kit its expensive sealant and wax but its great stuff

Wrong.

Fairy liquid is fine to use to help detox your car of waxes. Just dont do this very often. Twice a year max

have to say I've read that its bad for paint and strips wax but havent ever seen any proof

NEVER Fairy liquid it's got loads of salt in it!

Hence the reason why its good to get rid of old sealents, waxes etc to give you a fresh surface to start new from.

Pro's use isopropanol alcohol washing a car with a product that's laden in salt makes no sense to me

Please understand that the salt on the roads is going to cause more damage than a couple a washes with Fairy liquid a year, to detox your paint, will ever do.

I'd rather follow good practice myself , there are much better ways to remove sealants if need be

So what do you consider to be good practice?

My method is to use a product designed to remove sealants and waxes (with the exception of ceramic sealing products that need to be removed by machine polishing))

I use Farecla Detox with the assistance of fairy liquid and APC..Perhaps once a year

Its cheap, effective and safe

Hi, Chris.

I'm considering doing this when the winter is over, but being as my car is only 7 months old and will have, by then, only covered about 4000 miles...is it too soon?

If not, is it done in 3 separate operations...1, wash with Farecla, 2. Wash with Fairy Liquid, 3, Wash with the APC? Lastly I have a bottle of Bilt-Hamber Surfex HD, does that count as an APC?

Mant thanks, Chris.

Mike.

Yes Mike..BHSHD is All Purpose cleaner

After youve washed the car with a mixture of Farecla and Fairy Liquid...I would then clay it and then use the APC in a spray and pressure wash off

So, it wont be too early to do it in the spring? and it'll then be ready to polish, seal and wax?

Many thanks, Chris.
