It wont be no..Just pick a good day

Thanks, Mate.

Regards.

Mike.

I consider good practice to use car specific shampoos that don't contain salt there are quite a few , even strong snow foam will remove lsp

Rich..I know this!!

If you want to follow what you call 'Good Practice' go ahead..You still havent said what, in your opinion, this is.

One should never use Fairy liquid as a regular wash regime.

However....What I'm saying is:

Household Detergent can be used safely to remove LSP's providing its only used once or twice a year

I use Megs Gold Class Car shampoo, Prima Hydro and Bilt Hamber Autowash, Valet Pro pH neutral Snow foam and CG No Touch snow foam as my normal wash regime. Snow Foams will only affect your LSP if you get the dilution rates wrong..(1" in 1 litre of water is safe for most)

I snow foam every wash with no detriment to my LSP

I strip back twice a year using a combination of Farecla G3 Detox and fairly liquid and a liberal spray of APC..

...This removes all products and prepares the paint for polishing and/or protection.

As for good practice...What does this mean?

My philosophy is to be safe, effective and not too expensive.

I have been doing this for many years now on mine and friends/family/clients' cars with a very successful outcome.

My mother bought a VW Beetle new in 1968, she used to wash it once a fortnight with fairy liquid [too tight to buy t/wax shampoo sachets which was the norm in those days ] the paint and body panels were f_ _ ked after 6 years.

It would be...but lack of protection is more likely to have damaged it

Its safe to use once or twice a year to help to strip back your LSP

Just to jump in here, I'm, every two weeks or so washing then a polish then sealant on top. All AG products.

Is this too much too often?

Does come up bloody nice though even if it does take about 3 and a half hours!!

I polish my cars once or twice a year !

If the protection is still in place then it only needs topping up

How long does the egp actually last, any ideas? The rain beading seems to only last around two weeks so I tend to just do it again. Am I right in thinking not to seal unless its polished underneath? Thanks

Durability is a problem with AGEGP.

Its ok for a week or so, then it degrades quickly

Personally...I use waxes

Gets some Collinite and look forward to months of protection

I only polish once or twice a year (Scholl S17 and GTechnik P1)

...I dont like AGSRP at all..its laced with fillers, so only masks fine scratches and swirls rather than remove them

I dont see the obsession with stripping back LSP you only need to do that when polishing and only if there is any left on the car

IF you mix snowfoam a little stronger than normal it will remove the lsp as will tar removers like Tardis, as will claying I do all of these before polishing a car and after the final drying i also give a wipe down with IPA (50%) to remove anything left over before polishing

Its not an obsession

Yes a stripback/detox is only necessary when your paintwork requires some correction or reapplication of protection..after a claying for example

Its what I consider to be 'Good practice'

No Snow Foam I have will remove ALL your LSP

I prefer to clay a car that has a minimal or zero amount of LSP left behind

I always wipe down with IPA ( even if using a water based polish like Gtechnik) after polishing... to make sure the wax or sealer has a good base to adhere to

Well since you have IPA if you used it earlier and a product like Zaino Z6 after polishing you'd have better results AND not have to risk salt water getting in the cars nooks and crannies

Thanks for the info guys.

I think I've got this car cleaning thing all wrong. Don't get me wrong it does come up nice but I'm not getting the long lasting protection I thought I was. Turning out to be a bloody lot if work too!

I'm a fairly newbie to doing this ( my mk1 octy got washed about three times in the 4 years I had it )

I may well ditch the AG stuff and look at the stuff you have recommended as I want to take abit of pride in this new one! Any chance you could give me the exact names of products you recommend? Still wash the motor every week but not sure the polishing/sealing every time is cost/time effective. Thanks

Greg

If I used IPA earlier?

Never used Z6 Gloss enhancer/QD so cant comment

As said... I use waxes..mainly Collinite and Bilt Hamber Finis and Hydra and BH QD which is fantastic

All my doorshuts under bonnet and tailgate are well protected with this and QD..an area often overlooked

There are so many Greg

I use Shinerama..have a look in their website: http://www.shinearama.co.uk/ ......and use this code of mine to get 8% discount (Code supplied on request via PM)

Bilt Hamber and Collinite are my prefered products but as said a massive choice..most do the same thing, some better than others..

+ price is not always the sign of quality

Have a read here too.... its a very comprehensive guide and will give you recommendations of products to go with it:

Cheers chris- brilliant! Will get reading tonight. Looks pretty daunting but will certainly give it a good go. Thanks again.

Greg
