Rain Sensors?

Featured Replies

Another trick you can play. Park the car, windows down and tap the sensor. Windows wind up if you've got it right. After some time (hours, not sure how many) it seems to go into a deeper sleep and won't wind up the windows.

Whoa..........chill. I was only kidding.

I find the auto wipers ok..........after all they only come on when there is water on the windscreen.....in that situation I'd be turning them on myself anyway.

But I do know what you mean.....my auto headlights are always turned to off, as I like to decide when they come on.

Soz.

Been given a bit of a mullering on my 'first impressions' thread regarding my critisism of some of the electronic wizadry and 'toys on the Octy and just assumed you were getting a swift dig in to.

Still hate them though!

Wonder if I should stick some tape over the sensor,,,mmmmm?

This isn't always enabled by default. It's known as rain closing.

It can be enabled with VCDS.

On older cars, (Mk1 Octy, Mk1 Superb), if you are annoyed with auto wipers, you can retrofit normal intermittent in under 5 min. All you need to do is to replace the "rain sensor" windscreen wiper relay with a "normal" windscreen wiper relay, it's under the dashboard cover below the steering wheel. Make sure it is like for like, ie if you have headlamp washers fitted, the new relay also must have headlamp washer specced. Relay can cost as low as £5 on Ebay, and still under £20 at a dealer, just undo 1 panel, take out the old one, plug in the new one, replace panel.

I have not checked that yet for newer cars, but if there is no more relay on newer cars, then "enable rain sensor" would become a VCDS setting. If there still is a relay, then it still is replaceable.

I had rain sensor on both Mk1 Octy and Mk1 Superb, and found it too sensitive even on lowest setting. But the main reason was that I use RainX on windscreen most of the time, and this was really confusing the rain sensor. For motorway use, RainX and similar treatments make more sense that even the best rain sensor, as you never lose visibility completely.

Same here.Absolutely loathe and detest them. Probably the most hated feature on the car tbqh.

Thanks very much, but God actually gave me vision, so i can therefore decide if and when the wipers need to be turned on.Why oh why do manufacturers fit....and it's NOT just Skoda before anyone kicks off at me for being a Skoda hater..... such grossly overrated utter tat and nonsense, 'cus it defeats me completely.

I dont have them but wish i did. Have had them on other cars and my missus's car has them. They are superb. They work best when the rain is intermitent or keeps changing how heavy it is coming down. They also work well when there is spray on the motorway as it basically saves you having to constantly adjust the intermitent wiper speed up and down.

In hindsight i wish id specced them on the octy as when i had my golf i loved them.

God gave me vision as well but using your analogy we would be as well walking everywhere. Same can be said for DSG. I can change gears myself but why would i want to. Climate control as well, i can constantly alter the heater up and down also but why would i want to??

Move with the times, these things are there to make your life easier so you can focus on actual driving, for me they are a great feature even though i dont have them. Doh.

Mostly I like my auto wipers - especially as said above when the rain volume keeps changing. Occasionally they seem to get a bit confused though and even though it's they give the windscreen a wipe just to be sure.

I was thinking, from reading this, that I was the only person who liked them. I think they're great. I normally drive with them off and change to auto if it starts raining. The only time I've gone above auto was when it was snowing and ice was clumping up on the blades making them swipe as fast as they could.

Its definitely a feature I would get on future cars.

Huskoda - you are not the only one who likes them. I love them! They work flawlessly for me. I have the wipers set to auto, and maximum sensitivity - no issues at all, one of the best features of the car I'd say.

  • 8 years later...

I unplugged the connector in the rear view mirror for the sensor as my rain sensor wasn't working. Good news is that the intermittent settings now work instead! Problem solved!
