Im thinking about getting one for my fabia but I cant find any reviews on them. Has anyone had any experience with them ?

Wo there Danny,

I used to work at clutch re manufacturers and we took great care in our work

All bearings were brand new

All plates had brand new linings and the springs were properly retensioned

All Discs were properly reground and anything that was too grooved or pitted to re use were scrapped.

I can't speak for Black Diamond but just because there re manufactured doesn't mean there crap.

I wasnt speaking of all remanufactured parts but of techniclutch and black diamond. I know techniclutch are ****e and also while I was having ky clutch done because my techniclutch clutch fell after just 8 miles after driving my new car they also brought up black diamond who they said they had seen similar issues with.

Surely re-manufactured is not necessarily as good as a new clutch though?

Is the point that they may be being sold as uprated / higher performance when you may be just as well to get a sachs or something?

I'm no expert to this however but as I'm likely to need a clutch in the not to distant future I am interested in the discussion

From my experience when a clutch "goes" it is either the bearing or the plate lining which fails, the actual disc is very thick and tends to become grooved by the rivets that hold the lining to the plate, I have seen cracked and broken discs but not very often.

When a clutch is re manufactured the whole unit is stripped

The disc is is removed from the cover and the straps are thrown away

Any lining that is left on the plates is removed along with any rivets

all these are then shot blasted to remove any rust or debris

Once that is complete all parts are inspected and thrown away if deemed unusable

The plate then has its springs retensioned or replaced and a brand new lining is riveted on (L&K and Valeo linings were what we used)

The disc is ground flat to remove any grooves and is then measured to ensure that it is still thick enough

it is then re attached to the cover using brand new straps this is then dipped in paraffin wax to stop any corrosion while being stored

and if bought as part of a kit a brand new bearing is used.

The only part that I can see being an issue is the disc if it hasn't been properly ground, is too thin or cracked but any mechanic worth his salt should check this before fitting.

TL;DR

Obviously I wouldn't recommend a re manufactured clutch in place of performance clutch

But for a standard car I would choose re manufactured over a full price brand new one...But I do know what to look out for

How much would a remanufactured one cost compared to a new one then? (Sorry for going OT a bit)

When I was doing it which is 10+ years ago re manufactured clutches were 50 to 75% cheaper

No idea about today's prices

Just my input on remanufactured items.

When you get a "new" brake caliper, the chances are its just reconditiond and sold on as new. That is from part distributors of course.

A "new" alternator will most likely also be a remanufactured part where they have cleaned the casing and put some new internals and pulleys on.

Just today I have changed an alternator on a Mercedes A class. A new alternator was around £400 (it's a fancy water cooled one etc) but to have the damaged one overhauled cost £60. I have no doubt the alternator I had reconditioned will look and perform exactly the same as the "new" £400 one would.

Another good example would be turbos. If you read the small print on some turbos advertised as new they will say its just a reconditioned unit, and would offer a surcharge to have your old turbo back to recon and sell on as "new"
