Newbie help with Octy 4x4

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I've just made my forst foray into Octavia owneership with a 1.9 105 4x4 Estate and i'm loving it!

Coupld of questions though, i'm getting around 45mpg from it at the moment, from a mixture of town and motorway driving - is this about right? friends with the same engine but non4x4 get around 55-60 - i cant beleive it casues this much extra drag!

Also is it worth cleaning the EGR out (i used to do it every year on my old freelander) and replacing with the redcued gasket, i'm not noticing any hesitation but it does feel a little underpowered on the motorway and the MPG is not where i thought it would be.

thanks in advance chaps!

Different engine in ours, but mid-high 40's av. mpg is what we get. On a long trip at a steady 2000rpm in 6th it does creep into the 50's, but the 4x4 is indeed more thirsty than the 2WD equivalent - the weight issue from the prop shaft/rear diff etc. evidently being the cause.

Can't comment on the EGR, sorry.

What Rab-k said is spot on. I was a little dissapointed with the MPG on mine too at first but the few times the 4x4 has got me out of a sticky situation towing up slipways and beaches makes it well worth it in my opinion. Best I've ever had on a long run @60-65 was 56mpg on the computer so probably around 50-52 in reality.

Everyday use I'm around 45mpg just like you but I do drive it much more with economy in mind compared with my MkI TDI. If I hoon it, which doesn't make it go that much faster then i'm down to high 30's.

In regards to the EGR. How many miles has it got?

Its a very quick job (5 mins) to whip the turbo pipe off the EGR and have a look inside to see if it needs a clean.

Thanks chaps - it's done 92K, so i think it'll need a good clean. Would the reduced gasket make any difference to driveability / econcomy or does it just fix the issue of hesitation?

I haven't driven anopther with the 105 engine in but it feels as though (at 75mph+) it is getting towards the top of it's "legs" and a bit unresponsive - it could be just me though!
