Remap 170cr diesel

Recommended Posts

Hi guys been to a local firm that uses custom code and they have said for about 400 quid ill get 10% better efficiency 30 bhp but a lot more torque which is what I'll notice. Anyone done this is the change noticeable? By the way it also adds about 15% to the insurance bill.

Any experiences?

I have had a remapped car myself- looking back i wish i didnt do it. Not only does it increase- as you say the insurance it also reduces the life of your clutch, DMF and tyres. If you have DSG id also worry about how much torque the gearbox can handle. Yes it was nice when i 'pushed on' but be realistic, how often do you get the chance these days given the amount of cars and speed cameras on our roads. Did i enjoy my mapped car- Yes. Would i do it again- No. If i were to do it, i would use one of the larger companys (ie revo, amd) just for peace of mind you know these guys arnt going to close down next week. It sounds like an itch you need to scratch though so enjoy if you do.

I wouldn't recommend it. As stated above you will decrease durability immensely on wear parts. The DPF will also take a heavy beating.

I had my old Superb MK1 1.9 TDI remapped for 257500 miles and there has not been excessive problems until 2012, where i almost had to change every wear part on the car. But the engine is also a totally different build compared to the new ones and it doesn't have any DPF.

New cars are not build to last, they are build for the manufactors to milk the users for every penny they have.

On the other hand you have Shark Performance just down the road in Mansfield, they will totally transform the CR power delivery, I think 10% increase in MPG is a bit optimistic but it will certainly improve, providing you do not change the way you drive.

Yes if you drive the car hard then the mechanics will wear out quicker, drive it normal and I doubt you will see any difference at all.

I had both a re-map and a diesel box fitted to my SAAB 9-3 (at separate times!). Both claimed +30BHP and +10% economy. I uninstalled both - the improvements in economy were nil; the improvements in performance and driveability barely detectable; they f***ed up the trip computer and added about £80 per year to my car insurance. Total waste of money. Caveat emptor.

I had a Custom Code remap on my 140 Octavia (taking it to nearly 180) and for a while it felt like night and day. I remember an 'exciting' moment on the way home when I was going much faster than I thought into a bend. However, as time progressed it felt more and more 'normal' and I just got used to it. 20mph in slow traffic with 170+bhp feels just the same as it does with 140bhp. The MPG before and after were the same too; I saw no improvement at all.

The Octy had it's map for 3 years and was traded in with it still active. In all that time there were no mechanical problems at all, probably because I tended to drive it sensible 99% of the time rather than hoon it around. The big negative was trying to get insurance. Most of the 'specialist' insurers couldn't insure it for anything reasonable (£1000+? I don't think so) and most of the well known ones wouldn't touch it. Fortunately Admiral covered me, initially for about £50 on top of the unmapped price, but it started to rise each year and I did ponder having the map removed.

I find my Superb 170CR fast enough and it's much more of a cruiser than a racer.

I had my car remapped by Shark a few months ago. Hp went from 168 to 196, torque up from 361 to 440, Insurance went up around 10%. I have not noticed much of a difference in fuel consumption but certainly no worse. I have DSG box with DPF. Ben was confident that those parameters were within tolerance of the parts, he could have pushed for more but was reluctant to because of the DPF. Yes I may lose 10% life on them but to be honest I only do around 7,000 miles a year that I'm hoping for many years of fun, I know probably should have gone for the 2.0 petrol.

There was a jolt when changing gear originally but that now has gone, not sure if that is me or the DSG adjusting.

Would I do it again, probably, although it would be a different story if I now get problems

Many many thanks to everyone once again this is a great forum I am surprised about the negative thread going through the majority of comments. I do about30,000 miles a year so the 10% fuel increase was a pull. Because of my high mileage I'm thinking of replacing in the next year or so 400 plus quid seems a bit steep thinking about it. If I change my mind ill let you know and report back. Then again I might cave in and treat myself

Get it mapped. You do a fair bit of mileage and you will love all the extra torque during your long trips(safer overtaking)

Don't worry about the gearbox, my remapped Octavia 140 DSG (180bhp and 400nm) has 540,000kms and is still doing 2,000 to 2,500kms every week.
