Tyre rotation - does anyone do it?

Featured Replies

Good Idea depending if you are a believer that Winter Tyres on the Steering / Drive wheels only is OK with Front Wheel Drive Cars and leave non winters on the rear.

Depends what is on the rear really, tread, compound etc, and are they a liability in cold, wet, snow, ice or combinations of all that.

Plenty advise all over the net on why you should not do that,

others just get on and do that and have no issues,  'you decide'.

  • I dont rotate until the fronts need replacing, then I put the rears on the front and the new ones on the back.

  • I do a relatively low annual mileage but rotate mine once a year as I prefer to buy 4 new tyres at a time rather than mix old and new

  • Best tyres always on the back When the fronts need replacing put the old rears on the front & new tyres on the back, tyre companies do it for free & any Good tyre fitting company should know

It probably depends on the driver.

Good on the front will probably improve steering but leave the rear more inclined to step out, resulting in oversteer.

Good on the rear will probably leave the car less prone to stepping out but more prone to understeer.

Understeer is safer to deal with on the road and easier to compensate for, so that is probably why companies and so on recommend this. But each driver should choose their method depending on how they drive and how capable they are as a driver.

Personally, our tyres wear evenly because we have mandated seasonal tyres and they get rotated by default when we swap them twice a year. New ones are bought in sets of 4 with the best old one going as the spare.

I've been driving for 40 years and never once routinely rotated  tyres I do however believe in putting new tyres on the rear.... I did when I first purchased a front wheel drive car follow the mantra of best tyres on the front to the first time the back end spun out out on me and changed back to keeping the best on the rear wheels
