Wheel alignment and tyre choice question

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Had the buzzing on the motorway tonight :/ i know the front wheel balance isnt perfect so figure ill get the 4 wheel balance and alighnment check done. I live about 1 mile from an F1 auto center so was thinking of giving them a bell... any thoughts? as i havnt used them before. All i know is they use "hunter" alighnment gear?

Secondly the tyres my car came with are nexxon sumin or another (im gunna say cheap rubbish) when i get alittle heavy with the right foot im getting consistance wheel spin in first, stop in second but then lets go again at about 4k rpm so figure i might invent in some new rubber as well.

Not got much knowledge of car tyres tbh, but on my bikes i generally stuck with duel compound michelins, or super sticky dunlops.

Im considering a set of Dunlop Sport Maxx RT's £119 each at local garage( simply because i have confidence in them for my bikes.....) but a friend recommended Goodyear Eagle F1's again £119 each at my local.

Thank you

I am sure it was dunlops on ours and they got the dreaded inside edge wear and droning. They were crap. Got the 4 wheel alignment done (after the dealers made a mess of it twice) at a specialist (CLCM in Edinburgh) and put Falken 452's on the back. That was a couple of years back and never had a problem since. I am a biker too and have dunlops on the bike but the car tyres are really bad on the VRS.

Go with the Eagle F1 Assy 2's. Brilliant tyre. After using them on my 3 series and Octavia vRS I won't fit anything else.

Stay away from the Dunlop, people seem have problems with them.

Hunter alignment gear is some of the best in the business as long as the grease monkey doing it knows how to use it. Out of the two tyres you mention I would go for the Goodyears as they seem to get good reviews everywhere and they are what are going to replace my contis when they run out. The Goodyears are also recomended by owners of focus st's and they are really temperamental when it comes to tyres (the esp really doesn't like cheap rubber when you are pushing on a bit or have to swerve suddenly)

A friend has a stage 2+ k1 leon with the eagle f1's fitted and it handles the power impressively, although the fk452's arent too bad for the price.

The vRS I just bought yesterday has these Dunlop's on the back and Conti Sport 3's on the front. I'm about to replace the conti sport 3's (due to wear) for the Eagle F1 AS2's you've mentioned above. A lot of people have recommended them to me, so getting them fitted this week.

As for the Dunlop's, if they were low on wear as well, I'd be replacing them with the Eagle's straight away. After reading some reviews on the Dunlop's, they are rated pretty poorly for wear and performance.

Eagle F1's all the way!

As has been said above. Hunter equipment is the best but it's only good if the person who is using it knows how to use it!

I recently needed to buy two new tyres for my car.

It came with Continental SC2's from the factory in April 2011 and as they had lasted 30k miles without a single problem I decided to stick to the brand.

So I had two new Continental SC5's fitted to the back and the rear SC2's moved to the front. I paid £120.01 per corner for mine. (Get excellent reviews, EU ratings are A for wet weather stopping).

My last remaining SC2's are going to be good for around 38k miles which I think it pretty good, so cannot fault the brand at all.

Having the gear and having the knowledge to use it correctly don't always come together. Not knowing where you are, you're unlikely to get a recommendation.

As for tyres, I'm another one who wouldn't entertain Dunlops again. I currently have hankook ventus evo "something", and am very pleased. The fronts were fitted new when I brought the car, and after years of only using premium tyres, was a bit "hmmm". Some much better than I dared hope, so I got some for the rear. They have worked well in all respects, noise, wear, grip both wet and dry.

If I had to put 4 new tyres on mine would be a toss up between Pilot Sport 3's and P Zero Neros

Another vote for good years. They are great.

Now to find a hunter rig in Aberdeen as my wheel alignment needs doing.

http://www.alignmycar.co.uk will give you a list of places with Hunter setups, but the same caution applies that you need confidence that they know how to use it!

Where are you? That will make it easier for people to come up with some sensible suggestions :)

A vote for FK452's here.

Had them on previous beemers, got them on the vRS now.

Awesome tyres and just £90 a corner.
