scrap or keep?

Featured Replies

Octavia 1.9 TDI 2004 ALH. 252000 miles.

Just got back from the garage and they said the following:

inner CV boot split.

Outer CV boot is wrong part (too small)

Front wishbone rear bushes have split

NS front inner ARB bush perished

NS driveshaft has 1 bolt missing

Rear silencer delaminating

Downpipe flexi damaged

Rear axle bushes need replacing.

Bin, or keep?

Sounds like it depends on whether you can afford to replace, or its value in use (i.e good engine?) is worth more to you.

Are all those MOT failures? Some sound easy and cheap, some tougher.

Thats not to bad to be honest, i wouldn't scrap is just cause of that, i'am running my car with 2 split Cv boots, a drive shaft bolt theres an other 5 holding it on, rear axle bushes are a pain, downpipe will need replaced

Agreed all those are bolt on parts not like rust or emission issues. I'm sure your MOT is looking for work.. I agree with what was said above some of those sound like they should be advise issues not failure

I'd repair it if the motor/gearbox are ok.

The car was in for discs and pads and I specifically asked him to inspect and report on those specific (MOT type failure) areas.

I will get the turbo pipe oil leak done (on another post), and then see what happens when MoT comes in August.

It drives fine, he said there is no play in the bushes, they are just perished.

I think I will get the CV boots done (replace the split one, and fit the proper one on the other side) as if they go, and the crap gets in, it will cost more money in the long run.

Will it be worth putting poly bush items in to decrease labour costs (obviously they cost slightly more to buy, but the guy said they are easier to fit).

polly bushing the whisbones is a doddle, it's just getting the old ones out thats a pita, i got mines in with a spring compressor are 2 plates of metal, did the same with the rear axle and 2 sockets lol to space it out

lol the rear bushes are easy in comparison to the metal sleeve ones used in most cars. I found the best way to remove them was just to use a large lump hammer and some brute force and standard ones wind back in fairly easily

Repair, repair, repair

I drilled my rear bushes out and then fitted fabia vrs ones.

Front wishbone - either buy some new wishbones or if you have a press (or easy access to one) do it yourself at home. I found using a vice helped as well.

ARB bush - easy.

socket and a vice push the old one out and push the new one in.. simples

I had to replace :

-hood+grille

-both wings

-bumper

-front pannel

-both headlights+indicators

-rear bumper

-fuel pump

-rear wing needs repair

-alloy needs repair

-inner tie rods+outer tie rods, both sides

-right wishbone

-full vinyl wrap

And I'm not selling/scraping it :)

Wait until the MOT. Take it to a different garage or one that doesn't do repairs. See what it *actually* fails on. Then sort a new car if you have to.

This garage does not do MOTs. I'll get the important bits changed and then see what drops off in the meantime.

Point is that if you ask a garage what's wrong with the car and they think they will get work out of the answer they will find problems. There isn't a car out there with 250k on the clock that you couldn't find something wrong on if you were to look hard enough

iirc from my testing days, the inner cv boot, silencer delaminating, exhaust flexi damage and incorrect cv boot, are NOT mot failure items, so long as the exhaust is not blowing, or producing excessive noise. I will agree that you still need to change the inner cv boot to prevent dirt ingress etc. Its quite possible that mot regulations have changed, as i have not tested for over 7 years, but i am sure someone will correct me if i am wrong.

If the car is reliable, and you enjoy owning it, then there is nothing on your list that warrants scrapping it. ultimately though, it your choice and something only you can decide. i'll give you £50 for it. LOL!
