dual rear fog light. how to guide

Featured Replies

Not sure if this was covered before but I said I would do a little write up.

First off I applogize for the dirt of the car!! It has been washed since!

As there is only one rear fog light on the fabia (well mine anyway) I decided to see if the other side could be got to light up without much work. A quick look said it could.

With the standard 1 fog light.

The stuff needed

DSC_0099_zps158844df.jpg

Stanley knife or sharp blade

Pliers

Few inches of wire

Some tape

A scotch lock

A small flat screwdriver is also handy.

Start off by stripping roughly 15-20mm off one end of the wire.

Remove the carpet to access the back of the tail light and remove the bulb holder (the same as if you were changing a bulb) Now use the screwdriver to pop off the connector off the bulb holder.

Now wedge the stripped end wire into the free slot in the connector

Use some tape to hold it in place

Now look at the lamp on the other side. It will have no free slots and this extra wire is the one for the fog light. It was gray and white in my case.

Now locate this wire in the loom behind the left hand lamp (the one you are wiring the fog on)

You may need to cut some of the tape holding the loom together. Once you find it put the scotch lock on it and insert the wire you are after putting in the connector.

Squeez it with the pliers and flip the cover over. Use some tape to tidy up the loom and re-fit the buld holder and connector. Put the carpets back in place. Job done!

This is pretty simple to do but you do it at your own risk. I will not be heald responsible for any mistakes you make!

It has been covered before I belive, but IIRC not as detailed. Good guide and pictorial :)

I thought that all Fabia's had 2 fog lights at the back... but I have just checked out the fog lights on my 06 plate elegance, and it is just the 1 rear fog light.

However I am pretty sure that my old one 2000 plate one had 2 fog lights on the back...

Looks better, think I will do this for what it actually costs :) thanks for the guide!

so is there an actual wire for the second rear fog in the loom or do you just trace it back til you can get to the wire that feeds the other one

And you can get the proper clips off ebay that push in to the socket ....

Good write up. Should be made a sticky.

Does it have to be a certain kind of wire or will any do??

No you splice into the one for the other light. No need for a clip as the wire cant tip off any other wires in the connector block but you can use one if you want!

Just as long as its not to light as this could melt if you had them on for a long time. I used some 18amp wire

how far do you trace it back to find the other fog wire?

Its just at the back of the left hand lamp. You will see where the loom from that side goes into the main loom

Why would u want 2 rear fogs?? 1 is enough for people to see you in bad weather conditions hense why most modern cars only have 1.. and 2 can be confused as break lights and dazzle the person behind u (twice as much as 1 lol)..

You need 2 to show the width of the vehicle otherwise you may be mistaken for a motorbike .

Dazzling folk behind? The folk with HIDs don't give a damn about dazzling the folk in front of them.

Brakes have 3 lights, very easy to distinguish.

My last 3 cars have all had 2 rear fogs. And you switch the off when there is someone behind you regards if you have one or two. I dont care if they confuse them for brake lights as long as they dont run into the back of me!! Once they know I am there I switch them off. Nothing worse than driving behind a **** with his rear fog light left on!!

Fairly similar to how I did my second fog light when I had my Octavia although I spliced and heat shrinked the wire properly, can't stand the scotch lock menace :D

Nice guide :) On the Octavia II you just activated it VCDS, I never understood the logic of fitting the bulb and then deactivating it.

Single rear lights annoy me ... I much prefer the idea of a symmetrical pair, so that you can see the width of the vehicle (I don't know if it's standardised so that it the fog light goes on the right, reversing light on the left, or what - 2 is just easier to deal with visually [for me]). Having said that, I have no idea whether mine has 1 or 2 rear fog lights - it's whatever it came with ...

Most modern cars have 1 rear fog.

Fog on the right in UK or on left in Europe (or anywhere that drives on the wrong side of the road :D)

Reverse on the left fo UK or right for Europe

No need for 2 thats why they only have 1 :)

Nice guide mate, used it this afternoon (didn't use the scotch lock though, don't like them, dodgy, lol) and now have full set operating rear fogs, great!

Thanks again!

Does look better with both wired up :)

Two are not needed, as above its on the drivers side for a reason,so its the outer side of car so people can see the width.

Not all cars have three brake lights either, so two fogs could cause the brake lights not to be seen, depending on position in light cluster.

And if it's a Left Hand drive car ? Bang.

LOL

Pretty sure car manufacturers will have looked into it .............. :dull:

Does anybody know the ebay reference for the socket clips, I'm not keen on the idea of a wire wedged into the socket?

Don't worry if you wedge it thick enough it will stay if you are worried about it popping out tape the other wires to it for some rigidity

Using the same principle I wired up both my reversing lights too.

Didn't you already have 2? Mine did!

I did this set-up some years ago on the old 2005 Fabia VRS, simple enough to do, I added an in-line fuse just in case..

The dealer can't use the VCD's or whatever you call-it, to swap sides as there is no wiring leading to the nearside bulb unit..
