Octavia fuel economy

Featured Replies

Hi All

I am new to Octavia ownership ( picking the car up tommorrow) and this forum, I have just bought a 2002 1.9 tdi octavia estate 110bhp Elegance, I have a couple of question the first is most important to me !

What sort of real world fuel consumtion figures do people get ? I have a crawl to work and of about 7 miles ish each way, Am i in my right mind hopeing to get 40mpg ? I do drive lightly. I had a Citroen C5 estate which i will be selling soon as i was nt happy with the fuel consumption !

Has my octavia got a PD engine ? some people i have spoken to say yes others say no !

Can i fit cruse control to it ?

Thanks

Well i get 80mpg sitting at 1800rpm,in 5'th @ roughly 50mph

No your octy aint a pd engine and yes you can get cruise controll, chances are yours is a asv engine-code, glad to hear your getting rid of the ****roen

2002 1.9 tdi mk1 will not be the PD engine. I had a 2004 Mk1 estate 90 bhp which averaged 50 -55mpg. The only problem I had with it was the sticking vanes on the turbo.

I get 40mpg out of my vrs so the tdi is capable of much more than that. Your main problem is that it wont have gotten up to temp in 7 miles which has a big impact on the consumption

I used to average 45-50mpg in my old car, dropping to 40 with lots of driving round town, with long journeys on the motorway I could see 60+ though. Crawling 7 miles to work in winter is not going to be too good on the consumption though. Also you need to apply a liberal amount of right foot fairly regularly or you risk getting the infamous sticky vanes problem with the turbo, caused by crud building up in the turbo and causing the vanes to stick due to not enough use.

Your engine is definitely not a PD it's a good old injection pump.

I have a wonderful 02 1.9 TDI Octavia estate and never get less than 60 impg. Often & if I get a reasonable run on the infamous M6 to & from Birmingham daily, i get over 70 mpg on a 10 year old car. Good buy if its anything like mine.

Assuming its running ok, the 110bhp mk1 is great on fuel and should do your target easily.

Great car. I missed mine more than the mk2 that replaced it.

It's a bit late now but the best way to know what your going to get is to check the mpg trip counter when you view a car in the garage. You should get more than shown as it will have had a few starts when other people have had a view it but it's a good guide. On your Elegance use the left hand LCD on the clocks and the buttons at the end of the right hand stalk to scroll through the trip stuff.

I have kept a spreadsheet of tank-to-tank fuel consumption on mine over the last six years.

The long term average is 45.4 mpg. The worst was 38 mpg from a number of short journeys (engine oil not hot) in the wintertime. The best was long journeys in the summer on quiet non motorway dual carriageways plus some town driving, at 54 mpg.

The average on the in car computer readout is usually 42-45 mpg for city driving and 55-62 on long journeys.

You should realistically see 54+ if you motorway drive.

I get 40mpg out of my vrs so the tdi is capable of much more than that. Your main problem is that it wont have gotten up to temp in 7 miles which has a big impact on the consumption

55mpg with my vrs, nearly all motorway though.

I have a heavy foot so TBH 40 is better than I had expected when I bought it

Nice one, bet you won't get that around town though!! Welcome to Briskoda too. Always nice to see a fellow Brisky member on the south coast.

Hi, have had our Octavia for 5 years - 1.9 TDi Auto. Seem to be getting slightly less to the gallon than before. I can usually get 50 on my run to the office which is about 12 miles, now only about 44 and that's being really careful. What could have changed.

When was it last serviced?

Tyre pressures all correct, CTS, MAF, etc. Any fault codes being logged? Was it bad over the summer too?

What sort of mileage has it done? ZF Transmissions recommend changing auto trans fluid every 50_000 miles or so, and if they don't know then no-one does.

Clogged air filter?
