Euro Car Parts part selection?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Just looking at another post regarding wiper blades and the correct selection, it got my rusty cogs turning.

If you put your reg in etc etc, look for a set of brake disks you get a choice of say 3 Pagid Disks.......... Is there a right or wrong choice for them, also the same for pads.

P.S. sorry if this has been posted in the incorrect location.

Regards

PW

There are actually 3 different disk diameters on Diesel Octavias.

1.9 TDI with Manual transmission have 280mm disks, 1.9 TDI with automatic transmission have 288mm disks.

2.0 TDI PD engined cars have 288mm discs regardless of transmission, and 2.0 CR cars have either 288mm or 312mm disks depending on power output.......off the top of my head!

I guess the ECP computer has not been fed the necessary (and complex) information above, so it just gives you the choice. So, yes there is a right and wrong choice!

What a nightmare, you would think that ECP being as widespread as they are would organise something like that instead of having to issue credits for wrong parts..

Moan over

Surely they've actually done a large part of the job or you narrowing it down and it is, to an extent, up to the person who owns (or is repairing) the car to work out the specifics?

I've been there a few times wth ECP.

The parts search based on reg plate, is fairly accurate, but still throws up plenty of parts that aren't suitable. E.g. enter a 2.0 TFSI (vRS) reg plate and search for an oil filter and one of the options is the (incorrect) screw-in tin can type instead of the requried paper one.

It's not entirely clear, but yes - you do have to check the part number / size / type before purchasing.

I've also had a few sub-standard parts, e.g. a non-fitting Circolli water pump for the 2.0 TFSI, due to a manufacturing fault...complete pain when you've just spent hours getting down to the pump. More recently, a non-genuine Fabia II cabin filter didn't quite fit and needed modifying.

But hey...they are handy and give a reasonable discount, just make sure your getting the right part if you're planning to complete work over a weekend.

Can't fault the Pagid pads and discs, they seem to give equivelant if not better than standard performance.

It is sometimes confusing, and occasionaly when there is only one choice, the wrong part (in a sealed box) is purchased. This happened to me when the driver's side door mirror lens decided to say goodbye, and I ordered the part from ECP. When I received it, the part was obviously totally different. Thankfully most of the time ECP are reliable and cheap.

As rossm said above, that is the point I was aiming for.

Ive gone to GSF in the past and its never been an issue. Granted ECP have done the major part of identifying the correct part for a range of cars but wouldnt it be more efficient for both customer & business to Identify the exact part required.

It was the same for my BMW, I ordered brake disks for mine (320d) but much smaller brakes turned up, which were suited to a 316i, raaaaather big difference and I was without a car for a further day which at the time I couldnt really afford.

I suppose what you gain with one hand (discount) is what you loose with the other (accuracy).
