Next week the Swedish version of Auto Motor and Sport will test 10 GTI cars.

They will race the cars at a racetrack.

They will test the real tourq and the real horsepower and compare with the figures from the manufakturies.

Hopefully they will test the cars with tuning.

You can se the cars on the picture.

Sorry for my bad spelling but it

That will be interesting - I hope you will post again with the results (hopefully not in Swedish!)

No disrespect but the Fabia is no GTI :thumbdwn:

Yep, its a vRS, not a GTI ;)

However, what cars are GTI's these days? The new Golf yeah, but the GTI is all but dead in modern form. The vRS is certainly a hot hatch though. And before someone disagrees on that too, then I'd say it was, and its no less of a hot hatch than many other modern hot hatches, but if we are going to be picky about it, then one could argue there are no modern hot hatches left anyway... at least in the way some would think of a hot hatch.

Edit: Incidentally I find it peculiar how some people (owners) dismiss their cars in this way.... especially these days when the boundaries between hot hatch and their more mundane rivals have become ever more blurry.

Indeed I see it more of a GT than a GTi

Indeed I see it more of a GT than a GTi

So... whats the REAL difference between GT and GTI then?

GT = Grand Tourer

GTi = Grand Tourer Injection

Or am I wrong? If not, fuel injection apart, I see very little difference between the two terms.

If you had said you find it more of a grand tourer (i.e. cruiser) than a hot hatch, then I would tend to agree, although I still maintain the vRS is what I would class as a modern hot hatch.

Or even a GT TDI PD130 :D

Or to quote one car mag, the full title actually is Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI PD 130 vRS

Try saying that when your drunk!

Skoda don't seem to class it as a hot hatch, I think they call it a Sport hatch.

That is what I meant but I was being lazy with my typing :rolleyes:

Well having just done a nice trip from Boulogne (France) to Heerenveen (The Netherlands) I can honestly say it's pretty good at touring, at allsorts of speeds... ;)

the gti's of today are the cars you lot moan about being too loud, too bumpy, not refined enough, not enough extra's etc but come with a decent engine and handle nice when playing

Well, i don't know about you guys, but to me a "GTI" has always been a stripped out, light weight version of a hatchback with a decent engine. You couldn't class a Fabia vRS as 'stripped out' or 'light weight'. The last car that had a decent stab at it, in my opinion, was the original Renault Clio 172 Cup. It was a step in the right direction, no air-con, thinner glass, no spare wheel...

Thing is they are cr4p build quality, I know I owned the normal Mk2 172 and ditched it after about 8 months cause random bit of interior would come away in your hand :rolleyes:

Still weighs 1100 kg though doesn't it :P

I think you'd seriously struggle to call any car weighing more than a ton a true GTI. In other words, they pretty much died out with cars like the 106 GTI...

I didn't say it was a true 'GTI' or well built, only that it was a step in the right direction.

I think the days of hot hatches weighing less than a tonne are long gone now though. Too many safety requirements now...

IMHO the only true GTI's where the 205 GTI and the Mk1 and Mk2 Golf Gti's.

There are still a couple, but for how much longer I know not. IIRC, the Lupo GTI is 976 kg and could be called the closest spiritual successor to the original GTI.

Also, the Suzuki Ignis Sport weighs in at about 950 kg. Pity its butt ugly.

Smart ForTwo weighs in at just over half a tonne (mine was 625kg with an occupant). Petrol version can be remapped to just under 100bhp, IIRC. And it's RWD... :D

Rob.

I've heard the handling is appalling though?

And it has a horrid gearbox?

To be frank, I couldnt see myself driving one, but yes, I agree it has a certain appeal. :D
