Hi all,

first post here on briskoda after purchasing a 2005 mk1 octy vrs. I have just had it serviced (110,000) and there seems to be alot of minor problems and I would like to fix them all myself however I am a complete novice.

'N/S/F back plate corroded and damaged':

I understand this is some sort of cover that stops stones etc getting into the brakes? cant seem to find a replacement on the web however.

'Steering gaitor clip adrift - O/S/F outer steering gaitor clip missing'

have had a google but nothing comes up :/ have no idea what it is

'N/S/R shocker bump stop deteriorated':

replace shocker bump stop I assume?

'OS/R bump stop and cover adrift':

'both front lower rear arm bushes separated from bonding':

found OEM part but have seen people on the forum saying superpro bushes are the way to go.

Any help on how to get the parts required would be extremely helpful also the level of complexity of replacing each part as I am a novice and have never touched a car.

Steering gaiter is an easy one, rubber cover that goes over the track rod end, just needs a cable tie.

ebay is a good source of spares, i may have a back plate actually, will have a look.

Steering gaitor, is probably the rack gaitor, there is one left and right with the tie rods attached.

Bump stops are easy to do, if you are used to taking apart suspension, its not a novice job to be honest if you have never worked on cars, though is easier than the fronts at least. You need to take off the top mount, and fit new bump stop/covers.

Superpro bushes are good, but again wishbone bushes are not generally a novice diy job (tho can be done), as usually need a press, and someone who is happy taking apart the front end suspension (undo from subframe 2 bolts and split balljoint off of hub), then press out/in new bushes.

there are two options to choose from in relation to age:

1997-2004 and 2004-2009. Mine is an 05 plate mkI however I am under the impression 2005-2009 relates the the mkII so I should choose the 1997-2004 perhaps?

Mk1 is always listed to 2004.

The rear suspension is soo easy to do, just 4 bolts to undo from outside the car

yes it is Raf, but if you have never worked on a car, suspension is one not to learn on really.

yes 2005 onwards is mk2 generally

Sounds like the best place to start then thanks Raf. Halfords have what seems like a nice little set of tools to get me started and half price atm (link below) unless anyone else knows any better.

Is this enough or do I need specialized tools for work on the suspension?

Rear bump stops are quite easy to do. The shocker sits next to the spring rather than in it so the springs don't need to be removed. There are about three bolts each side that need to be replaced in the process. Only the bolt at the top of the shocker is the difficult bit.

Make sure that you get the right bumps stops too. The vRS has shorter ones than the lesser models.

Talking of which, where do you guys get your rear bump stops from. Eurocar parts sold me something which they claimed where bump stops but weren't. Is it pretty much a dealer/TPS only item? Mine seem to fail after about 100k :-(

Just replaced both rear bump stops without too much hassle, 1h 30m for a novice so quite a quick and easy task.

Just had timing belt done however and its now a tooth out and misfiring so ringing garage up Monday morning and getting them to trailer it back to the garage to have it sorted :/ just hope it hasn't damaged the internals :'(

should be ok with 1 tooth out.
