SATNAV for Smartphone

Featured Replies

Anyone got or tried Tom Tom Mobile for windows smartphones, If so I was wondering wether its worth buying as you can get it for 200 which is a lot cheaper than a standalone tom tom satnav system

A relation of mine has it.

It's OK when walking but not that good incar as the screen lacks enough usable information and to hear the sound you have to have the windows up and the stereo off.

Probably OK if you are only going to use it once or twice a week but it would drive me mad using it daily.

Proper car based (Not the PDA clones) satnavs like the Tomtom Go and Navman ICN6XX series are the only real choice if you want a daily use satnav IMO. Both have bright colour screens with clear amplified audio.

Currently Curry's/PCworld/Dixons have

I use my Dell Axim PDA with Tom Tom every day and find it no bother at all, Tom Tom Go won't tell you what appointments you have coming up, won't let you record voice notes, listen to MP3's, watch videos, compose a word document or alter a spreadsheet when it's not being used as a navigation device.

I much prefer my PDA/Tom Tom setup to a standalone GPS navigator.

Do you find your PDA loud enough when you are int he car, or I supose you would just turn down the tunes a bit when you are getting closer to the destination

I use tomtom with an ipaq 2210 and its plenty loud enough even when listening to the radio.

Not tried the Dell but have been in cars with HP, Compaq, Palm and Navman PDA's. None of them were loud enough or clear enough to let you keep the tunes turned up or have the widows/sunroof open at speed.

IMO if you want a GPS and don't need the PDA's extra fuctionality then a car based Satnav like the TomTom Go or Navman ICN6xx are a far better choice.

I have been using tomtom 5 on a smartphone for a couple of days. Very pleased so far. Never had sat nav so not able to compare it with anything. On my phone the speech is loud enough and speed related, the screen is a little small to see all information but the important stuff can be seen at a glance. Pretty good value for money although the week after i placed my order the price went by 50 Euros. Also it is a good idea to get a dedicated phone holder with charging - Brodit do a nice setup.

Still got the novelty factor and perhaps after a few weeks i will have a more objective view.

Speed Camera POI are pretty good function as well. :):)

I use my ipaq regularly and its ace, it has a built in speaker in the cradle though.
