Octavia 4x4 fuel tank -Bother!

Featured Replies

Have been a bit of a plonker and dropped a piece of plastic tube into fuel tank. Was giving it a shot of Millers Ecomax via a small funnel and 2" piece of plastic tubing when tubing came adrift and it went into tank. Bother!!

Had a look under neath. Looks like tank may be in 2 parts.

Anyone got any knowledge of set up please?

Don't think you can take the tank apart.

I'm not sure if you can access the top of the tank in the Octavia from under the rear seat......some cars you can do this where the fuel level sensor is.

I'd just leave the tube in the tank. It probably won't cause any problems.

From memory the tank is a saddle tank across the propshaft with twin pumps (one for each side). Is there not an anti-syphon grid or otherwise in the neck to stop such a tube getting down into the tank itself...???

If so I guess it'll not cause much of a problem other than to restrict the speed at which the tank can be filled. Have you tried probing it with a flexible retrieval tool?

Yeah, there should an anti siphon mesh in there. A wire with a hook on the end may be able to fish it out. It's what I'd try at least. I'd imagine DieselV6 knows about the neck down to the tank as he says a lot about venting them.

Many thanks guys for your input. There is an anti syphon grid and the plastic pipe is sitting on it.Have tried to extract it to no avail. My local VAG garage PC motors is going to try tomorrow with some fancy gismos

Will see how filling up goes

Once again thanks.

A balloon on the end of some flexible pipe maybe?

This may do the trick...

That what I have and what I was thinking of might be useful! It should will work eventually but really is trial and error and repeated trying until you final get it to latch onto things...

I find a wire coat hanger unbent into a straight length and then with a pair of pliars put a kink in the bottom it should be trial and error to resize the kink until it gets stuck inside the funnel tube but should work.

Thanks for all the advice. SUK told me there is an anti syphon grid and then there isn't. Apparently the filler is so convoluted that its impossible to syphon fuel out of the tank. I have tried all things. Electric cable with a hook. Garden wire and even a flexible curtain holder with a hook. Also a camera on a flexible probe - nothing seen so perhaps it's in the tank now although I did have difficulty filling so I suspect its stuck in the pipework. So my man is going to see if he can fix by looking through the fuel sender hole. If not its the tank out.

Bet you won't make this mistake twice!

Hope you get it sorted.

Remind me of the time I was changing the oil on my old car (Seat Cordoba PD130).

The sump plug was stuck so had to use an oil extractor. I was merrily pumping away (ooo-errr missus!) when the pipe popped of the extractor and started to slide down to dip-stick tube into the sump... I very quickly yanked the dip stick tube off and just managed to grab the pipe before it completely disappeared into the sump! That would have been annoying!

It certainly would.

But in actuality, it would have probably been easier to get out than getting a length of tube out of the fuel tank.....at least you can fairly easily unbolt the sump....although I suppose you would have had to source a sump gasket pretty quickly. But at least you would have already had a spare gallon of oil on hand to fill it up!

Got it sorted.

Guys at PC Motors Bristol took out sender(s) in tank, rodded the filler pipe and out it popped into their hands. Thankfully no need to remove tank which I was dreading. Will not do such a b. stupid thing again!!!!!

Thanks to all respondents
