Boom Bang-a-bang

Why are some vrs's on fixed servicing and some on variable?

2012 and VAG/Skoda decided the engines where suitable for Variable Oil Change Period (servicing),

so the designation was changed to QG 16. or what ever the code is

That does not change a Service Book that shows QG2

Plenty of older vRS are using Long Life Oil and the computer shows fixed servicing.

For The vrs I ordered today the dealer stated fixed servicing to me.

You will know when you look at the service book,

Bottom left code number on the Vehicle Data page .

Was that a Sales Person or a Workshop Technician that told you 'Fixed Servicing'?

I think your post earlier said you were given 'free 3 Year Servicing', was that right.

Are you paying for a 5 year warranty, or only keeping it for 3 years?

george

Three years free servicing and the sales guy said one service a year, so I am presuming it means its on fixed service intervals. I stuck with the 3 year warranty for now as I am unsure whether I will keep it after 3 years.

If its getting serviced 3 times thats fine,

not the same as being on 'Fixed Service interval', just you are going to be having it Serviced yearly.

It would be suitable for Variable Servicing (oil & filter Changes) if that is the code it comes with and new ones are variable.

Supposedly they're supposed to ask your expected driving pattern which should tie up with the servicing schedule. I'm expecting to do >30k a year, so variable for me is best as in many cases I start the engine and only turn it back off again when it needs a tank refill...or I need "watering".

As you say,the cause of the burnt out valve is most likely localised over heating.

It seems they have got the spark plug grade correct because that looks ok and the piston crown is still intact.

Unfortunately your type of motoring, which I believe is a lot of sustained high speed cruising,is where faults like this can show up.

I can't help wondering if they have done anything on the CTHE engine to address this issue?

I'd estimate over 90% of my driving time is spent sat at motorway cruise so high(ish) revs but low load. Odd that it went when I'd simply been accelerating (not foot to the floor though) after a period of cruising. Any strange bypass circuitry thats maybe a bit slow to react? It was about 0 degrees outside when it went..so I guess there was very little flow through the water radiator and then a rapid increase in cooling requirement. No clues from the placebo gauge from the dash, of course...it never moves from 90 degrees once its got there.

Do you know what Octane Fuel you are running when in Europe.?

There is some nice higher Octane stuff in the higher and colder countries, winter fuel and exceeds minimum requirements,

and some not so great in France & the low countries.

Not exactly up to date or accurate

I was on Momentum99 at the time (filled up at Folkestone Tesco before getting on the tunnel) when it went. Currently on German V-power Racing - 100RON.

I get twitchy when filing at Esso or BP in the UK as its only 97. Did get some Total Excellium in Belgium at 98RON.

I thought the exhaust valves are sodium filled to prevent them burning out. Maybe not all of them are...?

Sorry no idea what parts they fit in their engines, 'Do they know or have quality control ?'

seems a bit like the tyres they fit,

whats available at the time. Hit or miss, boom or bust.!

Tyres are a constant complaint from buyers yet having worked in "that end of the factory" on the automatic wheel & tyre assembly lines, they really are whatever they get the best deal on that week/month/year. Sometimes the orders are deliberately spread around differing manufacturers to avoid being hit by any possible supply issues by a particular manufacturer - also to play one off against the other on price.

Well, 5000 miles in and finally decided to check the oil level. Top of the hatched area...so added a little just for peace of mind. Oil temp seems higher than it was before - runs about 94-95 at cruise, hitting 100+ if I give it some beans or hit a long incline (or a bit of Autobahn..).

Whilst checking the oil, I did however spot that the water expansion tank looks very clear...plenty of coolant (correct level) but seems a bit lacking in antifreeze...unless they have a new clear version..? Could be a black mark against the Belgian garage. I'm sure it was fine when I picked the car up though?
