fuel tank max capacity when emptying emergency reserve

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the fuel tank capacity when emptying the emergency reserve ie the little plunger

Only seemed to manage 46l and it took ages.

Cheers

You mean releasing the expansion space... It all depends how much you had in when you started...

You can get 58L if you run it down to fumes then fully brim the tank and expansion tank. Takes ages and costs a fortune!

Jesus, so what is the capacity of the tank with filling the reserve?

Cheers

Could you please not use the word "reserve" - it's NOT a reserve - it's an expansion space.

And which bit of "You can get 58L" is causing you a problem in interpretation? L = litres...

Fair does i wont call it a reserve.

58L is a lot, i know its litres :wall:

Are you on your period?

Never managed to get any more than 41.5 litres in mine - I though that was low!

Although this was reported for being offensive, I have decided to leave as I think the initial "NOT an expansion tank" was put across in a way which was a little forceful / in your face, so not surprised it got the response it did. I also call it an expansion tank, even if it is (and I know it is) just an extra part of the normal original tank.

Please keep on topic, thanks.

I believe the stated capacity is 45 ltrs from memory, I also thought I was doing well with 55.7 ltrs from a vented fill, must try harder :D

The fuel tank is quoted at 45l, but that's after you start the empty process with 5l in the tank and then you have 20% of rated capacity as an expansion tank (9l), so 58l sounds in the ballpark.

The empty process is important to remember if you're seeing zero miles on the fuel reminder countdown. The procedure for calibrating the fuel sender requires the technician to empty the tank completely and put 5l in which you then tell the car is the 0 mark on the fuel gauge. So when the car says 0 miles left, you've actually got about another galon of fuel. So that's 5l of diesel. After that, you should be able to put 45l in the tank without touching the expansion tank pressure release switch (the little lever just inside the filler hole).

If you have the car ventectomized (remove the pressure release valve completely) then you can get about another 9l in the tank or if you're really patient you can just hold the vent pressure valve open while you do it.

Normal warnings apply - don't fill the expansion tank unless you intend to use that 9l / 2 gallons of fuel pretty much immediately and be very careful if the air temperature is over 20C ie. a warm day.

hmmm...

I have done the nipple mod.

And I can confirm, With 30 miles lift in tank I have filled the car with 57litres of diesel. Only once have i filled it right to the brim have I had splash back...

You can certainly feel the extra weight!!!!

Used to do this on long journeys in the Cordoba.

Good for 700+ miles range!

Think the most I ever got into the tank in one fill-up was 56 litres. Must have already been some in there.

Also very useful for making the most of the cheaper fuel in Germany before heading back.

Will try it in the Octy when we go to Germany next week and see how much I can get in there. Lol.

Hmm I'm confused. My car was displaying 25 miles left, and I've opened the little flap which releases the air and I still only managed to get 42.5 litres in there, from what I'm reading I've got around another 3 gallons of fuel in there!

How many times did you press the little nozzle to release the air?

You either have to hold it down the hole time or keep pressing it and filling to release the air.

Phil

I press it before I fill up and then hold it down to release the air before brimming it, I usually brim it so that I can see fuel if I look inside the cap

But if you watch the fuel does it then gurgle and disappear down?

I used to fill till it clicked, press button, fill till it clicked, press button, fill till it click etc etc until no more air came out and it would fill no more and there wasn't a gurgling as the fuel trickled down into the tank.

Phil

Not if I do it a few times it doesn't. I only filled up last night so will try it again next time I fill up, but this time I will hold it open while I fill all the way. See how it damaged the wallet! I can still get around 430 miles, avg 46 mpg.

Thats what i did more or less 3 times, and i could have been there for another 5 minutes easily i reckon until no more air came out.

So when the car says 0 miles left, you've actually got about another galon of fuel.

Be careful about taking fuel range very low. I ran out on a busy roundabout with '10 miles' showing. A week or so earlier I drove it briefly with '0 miles'. THE RANGE COMPUTER LIES!

Someone will be along shortly to tell you that it's accurate for them, just like every mpg thread.

There are various calibrations an stuff to consider, all trip computers arnt as accurate as each other.

With regards to the range left display, it works it out using your recent driving economy. So when I'd done a long motorway run and was down to 10 miles, then hoon'd it across town I ran out before the trip computer could adjust and tell me so it still read 10 left.

Does the spare tank get used first or last? Does it get used and then it goes on the miles to empty or does it got to 0 miles to empty and then use it ? Also is it a tank with a compartment or 2 tanks ?

Don't start calling it a spare tank!

It would get used first and as far as I know it is not a separate compartment.....just allows a space at the very top of the tank to fill with fuel.

the thing is with the extra fuel that we can squeeze in our tank using the above method, i have been doing this method for a bit and if i put in say shell fuel in i can sometimes can get 40-50 miles more than if i use say tesco fuel, so is the extra couple of pence worth filling with branded fuel to supermarket fuel, hey i'm all for saving a couple of pence or two but them extra miles could be one less refill a month. happy days.
