steering wheels with airbags

Featured Replies

hi all,

im sure some of you will know the answer to this and have no doubt done it.

how easy is it to remove a steering wheel with an airbag and fit a new steering wheel transfering the airbag over to the new one?

thanks in advance

Removing the Fabia wheel was pretty easy. It's very similar to the later Golf's so I expect most VAG ones are the same.

You will need a splined tool though.

Some outline instructions are here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dgace/control_stalk.htm

I forgot to add, I used a permanent marker to mark the bolt position before removing it and then another mark for the position of the wheel before pulling it off.

It's about a 10 minute job.

if changing the steering wheel to another new one does the airbag just disconnect from the steering wheel and fit into the new one?

Yep.

looks like it could almost be a diy job

It is a DIY job Kenny, as long as you can lay your hands on the splined tool.

As long as the wheels are the same the airbag will be a straight swap. Remember to disconnect your battery 30 mins prior to starting work.

Spline is a few quid from your local motor factors. May be labelled as being suitable for Ford cylinder heads IIRC.

yeah the wheel is a straight replacement.

might get my local helpful garage to do it for me :D

Just the thread I needed, I rang my local dealer today for a price on a leather steering for my Octy.
