supercharger to vrs?

Featured Replies

just wondered if its ever been done thought about or even possible to fit a supercharger to a diesel vrs never heard of anything so just wondered

Superchargers and diesels tend not to go together, simply because turbo's work better, i.e. low down torque of a diesel lump gets you going then the turbo kicks in and boosts the mid-top range.

Superchargers are much more linear and therefore they don't fit the torque curve quite as well.

yeah i got that shame i wondered if it was possible as it would be a good thing to maybe try continious power

My mate keeps asking me about twin charging mine with a supercharger but I'm sure if it were possible, someone would have done it by now. I'm not aware of any supercharged TDI - here or overseas

yeah neither am i ive searched but got nothing but doesnt mean it cant be done

but saying that my boot lid hasnt been done only one close is a square one that reg doesnt fit so always a first for somthing ..

reason is i was looking on the gay n theres a charger saying for fabia seat etc n just thought wondered if it was possible as it stands to reason the power of both will make it rocket. but with it being a cast iron block should hold well

everyone has them in detroit

Perhaps easier on the big block diesels, but on a 1.9 it looks like vnt turbos are generally accepted as the only form of charging

Superchargers and diesels don't go together??? Wtf??

yes it's possible, no it's not worth it is the simple answer to the question.. In theory a turbocharged engine Is more efficient that a supercharged one because heat energy in the exhaust gas Is being scavenged to drive the turbo, to drive a supercharger there are parasitic losses of upto about 50bhp just to drive the charger, but you might gain say 70bhp from it on an engine which is naturally aspirated so it makes it worthwhile in that sense. On a diesel engine that is turbocharged the peak output would be roughly the same but all you would alter is the torque curve, the pd diesels don't have a lack of power at the bottom end as you know...

the other thing is boost pressure, a decent roots type charger will only really run up to about 12psi before it runs out of steam, diesel engines need much higher boot pressures than that to operate in their happy zone

Happy Zone .....

Im having that !

Would it be possible to get a twin turbo setup?

Would it be possible to get a twin turbo setup?

yes, you could do 2 same size turbos side by side, or do a sequential setup and have a small one for low rpm and a large turbo that takes over when the small one can't cope.... How big is your wallet?

for 2 same size turbos you'd also be better off splitting the inlet plenum into 2 separate bits which only feed 2 cylinder each. For sequential turbo setups the pipework is quite complicated and you need various valves and bypass chambers etc..

I don't think either setup would be beneficial on these engines in honesty.

twin turbo sounds interesting in a perspective to be totally diffrent thats the whole point of it .. i thought a charger would be good for low down rpm and then turbo for top end but saying that diesel turbos are terrible top end

I do like the concept of it deano, rather than downing a fortune on a hybrid turbo, just use 2 standard turbos side by side, each one is only fed from 2 cylinders each, should be good for 300bhp i reckon. it would be a fairly simple fabrication job to knock up a tube and plate manifold, or you could even possible chop up a pair of oem manifolds to make it work.

i think i might look into that as a manifold is cheap and a standard pd130 isnt that expensive .. pipework ebay is my friend lol plus itl be anexcuse for a front mount as instead of running pipes all on one side or a massive long pipe back on itself itl be easier to run one on the passenger side aswell to help lag..

tbh a twin turbo set up and my idea of a scooby type intercooler setup (excusing the stupid bonnet vent lol) it should be a very quick setup short pipework and 2 pd130's hmm my life must be really sad to be sitting thinkin of these things

Yer I wa thinking bout that top mount intercooler you asked about before, it could work, it would keep the intake ducting nice and short, you would need 2 seperate intercooler cores though, one for each turbo..

It's not sad to think of ideas, all ideas are valid, all you need to is apply some engineering to the problem then it would work, I wouldn't recommend fiddling with a car that Is your daily drive however.... Find and old ****ter to play about with.

Yeah your right with the daily driver . The intercooler setup could work from a cupra maybe as they run twin coolers. Maybe worth contacting an exhaust builder for manifold n exhaust intercooler pipes I can do and only problem is oil feed I'd imagine I'd have to run 2 separate feeds

Didn't honda do a Super / Turbocharged car a few years back?

yes probably, lancia did it donkeys years ago on the delta s4, it was revolutionary stuff back then

im sure saab were the first to evefr do it if im not mistaken
