Fixed or variable service?

Featured Replies

Had my 2009 vrs serviced last April at 55800 miles and asked them to put it to fixed servicing as I dont cover many miles a year. It was on variable when I bought it last January.

Anyway I have just covered 62900 miles now and the display states that the service is due in 11600 or 431 days.

Does this mean that its not been changed over to fixed?

It states on my invoice that it was set for fixed service.

Mine is on Fixed service interval - immediately after service the maxidot shows service due in 9400 miles (15,000km) or 372 days. It took me a while to work out where the 372 comes from! It is 12 x 31 day months.

Looks like they left your indicator on variable

Mine's on a fixed.service.plan, but the car is still set to variable. You can switch it to fixed if you've got maxidot or know someone with vcds, but if you do I've seen elsewhere the oil temp display dissappears. Think this is because all you do when changing it is switch the senors off that monitor and determine when your variable is due. Can't see it makes much difference tbh, as I'll just ring up when mines 12 months old and book it in obviously it would make a difference the other way round but in our cars I don't think it matters.

Rang the dealer who did the service and they were adamant that it was set to fixed. Eventually he agreed that I was right and said just leave it till they next service it. LOL who said I would be taking it back there.

Anyway its going in tomorrow to be changed to fixed.

mine is on fixed and I have oil temperature

I do about 15k miles/year and my car is on "variable" but I just take it in to my local indy - DSB Autocare (no connection) annually because it suits me.

Dave

mine is on fixed and I have oil temperature

Looks like someone was wrong then-unless they then switched the oil temp sensor back on I guess using a VCDS! I didn't change mine in the maxidot because I find it useful to know when my engine is fully up to temperatuse and didn't want to risk loosing it

You can change it to fixed yourself by resetting the service indicator following the instructions in the manual.

It is the other way (fixed to variable) that requires a trip to the dealers.

Can you? Well its going in tomorrow to be done now.

Hi- I just got mine serviced by an independent. I was on variable serviceing and I wanted it to stay that way, but when I got it back the service incidator read "9400 miles or 744 days" to next service- does this mean it's on variable or fixed??? Longlife oil was used (at least charged for). Is there an easy way to determine how the service interval has been set? Cheers!

Well as I said I took mine back yesterday and when I checked it mine said 9300 miles or 371 days.

It only took him 2 minutes to change it from variable to fixed.

Are you implying oil temp can be shown on maxidot with a vcds adjustment? If so I'd be interested in knowing where in vcds this is done pls?

Thanks

My dad's A3 ended up with this sort of half variable half fixed weirdness, I changed it back to fixed with VCDS. Give it a few days and see if the distance changes first though.

My vrs every 9400 mls its a taxi.

Not 100% sure but I think it is only a feature on FL models - the maxidot is different to pre FL models.

I bought this car new from the showroom display. When I test drove it the oil temperature readout worked. I asked for the service to be set to fixed and when I took delivery the oil temperature display was available but read "---" all the time.

Told dealer, took it in and they activated the oil temperature without changing the service type.

Ok thanks, yes the pre fl maxidot is definitely different although I know there is an oil temp sensor based warning so presumably the info is there.

Cheers

Hi All.

My servicing is currently on variable (before I bought it a few weeks ago) and I'll be driving about 12000 miles per year.

The next service is due in April 2014 according the log book, but was wondering whether I should really take it in before then, now that I'm doing the 12k a year? I THINK the last service was done at ~42k and the cars now done 51k.

Thanks

If your car's on variable and has already done 9k since the last one the service light will come on before April 2014 as you'll have done 21k by then. How long does it say you've got left? variable is at most 20K or 24 months and in reality will be less than that unless you're cruising on the motorway all the time. TBH if you're not confident when your car was ;last serviced it might be a good idea to have it done so you have peace of mind? Sorry the font's a bit wonky but it plays up when I try to change it

appoligies if you've seen this before but the variable/fixed optons and which is best for you is in the Octy II brouchure

Service Intervals

When you order your Octavia, you can choose whether your car is on a fixed or a

flexible service regime. Your retailer will help you decide which regime suits how

your car will be driven, enabling your car to stay in the best possible shape.

Fixed regime: Service every 10,000 miles or one year (whichever comes first).

This is recommended if the vehicle is likely to be used in the following way:

>

Driven fewer than 10,000 miles per annum and/or

> Mainly short journeys, drive mostly in towns or cities and/or

> High vehicle loading/towing and frequent hill climbs and/or

> Heavy accelerating and braking, using high revs

Flexible regime: Sensors in the engine detect when a service is needed. You will

be informed of this by a service light which will show at any point between 9,000

and 20,000 miles, up to 24 months (whichever comes first).

The flexible service regime is recommended for vehicles with a daily mileage of

more than 25 miles where the vehicle is driven regularly and mainly at a constant

speed with minimum vehicle and engine loading, minimal towing and driven in an

economical manner.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I may just book it in soonish and get it looked at as you've mentioned above.

Looking at those specifications annual mileage is ~12k, I do 34miles a day commute + any extra travelling, but then some of this can involve heavy traffic (so heavy acceleration). Some of my commute is flowing 60-70 roads, whereas some of it can be heavy traffic and a lot of 30 limit roads. Hardly any towing / extra load used, apart from when the golf clubs are shoved in the back

Difficult, based on that spec, which type of servicing I should go for! I'm sort of in the middle of both of them.

Worth speaking to Skoda to see what they think?

Won't do any harm I suppose.... Just makes me laff a bit 'cause for the variable you need to drive like miss daisey..... in a vRS.... yeah right that's going to happen    ! I get 2 full sets in cart bags plus 2 electric trollies in mine, one of the main reasons I got an Octy  . If you check out the price you'll probably find the difference over a 3 year period in cost isn't that much as the variables are more expensive, but you have them less often so you got an extra oil change on the fixed. I'm on the 3 free years fixed plan so I'm chuffed, but TBH even if i wasn't I'd have mine on fixed and if they give you a curtesy car as well the disruption isn't so bad. SWMBO has a 1.9pd seat and that's always been on fixed and she does about the same miles as you, yet the same engine with the same VAG oil can be on variable elsewhere which is bonkers IMO

I think I'm going to just book it in for a service and change it to Fixed as i'm doing close to the 10k recommended anyway. Also for peace of mind!

  • 1 month later...

I have a 61 plate Octavia estate with i think the maxidot display(how do you tell)

I read the manual and it says you can use the trip button to see how long is left for the service but when I try it nothing happens.

How will I know whether its fixed or variable although the manual says variable "QG1"

Emailed the dealer i bought it from 6 weeks ago suprise suprise no reponse

can anyone help please

How to tell maxi-dot: when you open a door the display shows a full size view of the car showing which door(s) are open.

If you have maxidot then press the up/down rocker switch and hold for 1-2 sec. A menu appears. Use the rocker to run up/down the menu until you reach "settings? set up?" - select by pressing the button under the stalk. Run down the menu to "service interval", select, then select "time to service".

That will tell you how many days/miles to service.

Can't help on non maxi-dot.

Hello

Many Thanks for the reply, judging by what you have said it looks like the maxi dot so I will try this out later

Don't mean to be stupid but is the rocker switch on the stalk?

I will try this out and let you know

Thanks again!!!!

Do you need ignition on to do this?
