Most miles out of a full tank...

Featured Replies

What's the most amount of miles everyone's had from a full tank? That means filling up to the maximum, including expansion tank, and driving untill you daren't go any further...

I ask this as I'm doing a majorly long journey this coming weekend and want to compare mine to others, I have a vRS and its been well looked after and it's just got serviced last week so I'm hoping for a lot !

Never done expansion mod. But 45L brimmed and drove down to 10miles left on trip computer I managed 500 from sensible driving mainly motorway at 65mph.

Without venting I once did 554 miles before filling back up in my Seat Cordoba PD130.

About 43 litres went in so there wasn't much left!

Also I will be the first time I have done the venting so is there anything I shoud know or watch out for? Thanks

Yeh make sure it's not a warm day and that you are going to use the car more or less straight away (risk of fuel expanding and pushing out the tank).

Never had a problem doing it though.

thanks Phil, how do you know when to stop or will the pump just click as it normally would ?

On my previous Hybrid Fab I got 640 miles fully brimmed. The range was on zero for a couple of miles before I got to the Shell garage.

Basically keep pressing the little button when the pump stops and no more air comes out then pump more in.

Eventually it will fill right to the top of the filler and either stop or you can go really slow and steady and fill it right to the brim of the filler. I've done that and got about 700 miles out of it!

so you'll actually be able to see the diesel filling up to the top where you put the pump in so I won't spill it everywhere? Gunna give it a try in the morning wish me luck !!

I managed to get 52litres in and got 712 miles out of that ( Mapped PD100) doing only motorway miles

I always get roughly 600 miles out of mine. You will do maybe 150 miles before the guage even moves too :-)

i achieved over 600 once just to prove I could do it - but it was a very dull 600 miles.

just over 500 to a tank is my norm.

i've managed on a run up to teeside and back to wales, 535 miles and the trip computer pinged, 70 miles left but didn't want to run out on the a42 returning home, so i put a can of diesel which i had in my boot just incase i needed it not far from jct 30 m1, that got me home with 90 miles on trip computer when i got home, averaged about 57-59 mpg @ steady 70 mph, standard block with k+n filter, i don't want to chance that trip computer giving out inaccurate reading, i've managed to fit in 50 litres in my tank using the expansion button, as its one less visit to the garage, i used on that run up north shell city diesel, i have found that the v-power was good for giving better mileage per litre of fuel. this week i managed to get 510 miles with 85 miles left in tank according to the figures.

barbourc1 that is one impressive mileage figure, i can get my computer up to 90 mpg @ 40 mph first thing on my way to work, cold engine so don't open out, takes about 8 miles to warm up to 90 degrees.

This doesn't seem to add up, my ancient and uneconomical mpi manages 506 miles on a vented fill (41mpg) so assuming a PD diesel can do 50% better and hit 61.5mpg then surely you should be hitting 750 mile tank ranges with a bit of effort and mid to high 600's if you drive sensibly?

I'm guessing I could achieve 700 if i did 700 miles in the one journey.

My 600 was achieved travelling no more than 25 miles in the one journey. That's over 20 cold starts and warm up cycles. Diesels dont do their max mpg's until they are up to operating temperature.

Off the topic I went first time on the mway with my car and got 64.3mpg on the trip computer cruising 65-70 I was soo impressed

I've had 450 miles out of a tank (unvented, as I haven't tried that trick yet) but that was me driving quite quickly on Argyll A-roads and a mix of single track roads, motorway and town between my house, my mum and dad's, and back.

I'm going to try venting the tank on the next fill up and driving sensibly to see if I can get between 550 and 600 miles out of the tank

I know the warmup cycle on a PD pretty well, in cold (read freezing) weather 12 miles won't see it hit 90c coolant temp. When it's down to -18c (about -45c including wind chill at 70 mph) you can expect the 'stat to struggle to maintain 90c. I also appreciate how quickly a petrol warms up by comparison.

Each of the runs I did on the 506 mile trip was no more than 45 miles at a time.

Dont get me wrong it was very boring and never went over 70. Glasgow to Manchester and back plus a week commuting I was well impressed. I usually will get 600 as the light pings with 65miles left in the tank

I reckon I got close to 800 miles whilst cruising at 55-60mph through France a couple of years back.
