Still slightly non-plussed about this. It would be 'logical' if our 105PS is the older cam chain based one (the belt/chain would be behind a casing rather than visible as far as I can tell and I have absolutely no intention of dismantling my engine after only 350 miles!) ..... Anyway... I looked in the service book (same info on a sticker under the boot floor) and the engine code given is CBZB.

According to this list the engine is old tech (the CBZA 63kW variant being fitted to Golfs from 2010 for example), 8v rather than 16.

It doesn't bother me though, it's a cracking little engine and I'm really enjoying driving it :)

Yeah I'm pretty sure the 1.2 TSI in the Rapid isn't the EA211 unit. That seems to be reserved for the MK7 Golf platform cars. Still not much between them, the only notable differences are 8v/ 16v and cam/ chain.

I thought the new unit is reversed - inlet at the front and exhaust at the rear?

I drive a remapped PD140 and was expecting to be disgusted with the 1.2tsi...........but not so, it's a great little engine. Very frugal aswell (until you cane it)

it is indeed. Its a totally new unit inc. materials, size, intercooler type and head setup so its not just the placement. :) It's weight is now down to just 95kg and it runs a second low temperature cooling circuit for cooling the turbo and i/c. The exhaust manifold is now integrated to the cylinder head which is designed to allow quicker heating up of the cabin. All round it offers big improvements in several key areas inc economy and emissions. :)

First one of this series was (I think) the 3-pot in the CitigoMiUp and I'm astounded by the warmup time in wifeys - only engine thats ever come close was the Rover K series IMHO. Did a bit of reading up on it when I heard it had an integrated exhaust manifold for quick warmup - I was curious..

I had a Courtesy car with the 1.2TSI engine last week - a Rapid 1.2TSI SE with only 700 miles on it - and was expecting a rather dire and sluggish ride compared to my 1.8TSI Scout.

I must say though I was very impressed with that little engine. Not being a boy racer type (more of a flat cap and pipe age now), and always driving (well, almost always) staying within the legal speed limits, that car impressed. Ok, the cheaper interior, no armrest and lack of toys made it seem a bit basic, but there were no complaints about the drivetrain from me. My average MPG in the Scout for the 50 mile - mostly motorway, M4 and M25- commute is usually 38-40MPG (indicated), in the Rapid I hit 54MPG (indicated) on the run home and 60MPG on the run back to the office again the following day. Not too shabby!

To be honest, as 90% or more of the time there is only me in the car these days, I'd definitely consider an engine downsize when I decide to change from the Scout. If the 1.2TSI is so good, it makes me wonder what the 1.4TSI is like? :)

I've not tried the lastest 140PS 1.4, but even the older (fitted to the Rapid) 122PS version didn't hang about; I tried one in an Octy II Estate with DSG and didn't find it lacking. The new 1.4 140PS is on my hit list when change time comes around in about 12 months or so - hopefully with ACT by then.

The economy in the 1.2 TSI fitted to the Rapid (EA111 generation) is proving to be pretty respectable for me. Granted I'm "taking it easy" on the motorway leg of my commute (the M56 rarely lets me get up to 70mph for any long periods of time anyway even if I try to) but the first two full tanks I've used have worked out close to 52mpg which includes quite a few cases of crawling forward in traffic jams (the trip computer indicating 54, so fairly close).

I'm on a long run to south wales and back in a couple of weeks for a family errand so that'll be a good economy test.

The techno info on the EA211 generation 1.2 fitted to Golf/Octavia etc makes it sound like it should only be better on economy than the one in mine and I think the new Octavia is comparable in weight to my Rapid as well. Great little engines.

The 140PS is great, I got 47 mpg brim to brim from my first tankful without really trying. It warms up so

quickly that the stop start function worked this morning at the first traffic lights I came to within a couple of minutes of starting from cold, a previous mini I had with stop start wouldn't work for 15 to 20 minutes before it warmed up enough. I've set the mode to economy today and can't detect any change in how it drives certainly no problem overtaking on A road and 53 mpg indicated from the 40 mile roundtrip. I've yet to try the sport mode :)

What do you think about 1.2 TSI 86 hp engine in Octavia ? Is it good ?

I think one of the problems with oldies like me is that we grew up in a time when you needed something like a 3 litre V6 to call a car powerful.

I am still very surprised at how well my 1.4 goes (though still prefer my previous 1.8 TSi !!)

In time past I would have thought my 1.4 TSi was a 16 valve 2 litre job at least. I'm not saying I would not enjoy more grunt but these days I certainly

don't need it and greatly enjoy the car's overall economy (mpg, tax etc etc.)

These low boost turbo engines require a bit of a change of attitude compared to normally aspirated (NA) engines.

A good modern NA engines torque is proportionate to the cubic capacity, Rule of thumb says a 2 litre NA engine produces 200Nm of torque and usually fairly high in the rev range, at lower revs less torque is produced.

On the other hand our small capacity turbo engines are designed to produce their best mumbo from low to mid revs.

The 1.4tsi produces 250 Nm from 1500 to 3500 rpm  and 103 kw from 4500 to 6000 rpm

I reckon the 250Nm from 1500 to 2500 rpm would require an NA capacity of about 3 litres

From 2500 to 40000 rpm about 2.5 litres

From 3500 upwards the torque falls dramatically so the maximum power of 103kw is only equal to say a 1.8 litre NA engine.

The 1.2tsi produces 175Nm presumably over similar rpm to the 1.4tsi so probably performs like a 2.3 litre NA engine in the lower revs and a 1.4 litre higher up which is not shabby.

The other factor is that the Octavia is relatively light compared to what the weight of those larger capacity NA engine vehicles would be so there is quite reasonable performance and /or good economy from these tiny engines

Downsized engines, particularly the VAG TSI's are impressive.

Ive had a 1.4 TSI 180ps in a Fabia vRS and it was great......found it was a bit flatspotty higher up in the rev range and as soon as peak power was done it was pointless revving it harder (though it was nice having something that would rev to 7k rpm) but is postively flew for a 1.4 lite car...the supercharger helped massively at low speeds though.

Ive also sampled older Fabia 86/105ps 1.2 TSI's and was v impressed with both. The 105 provided about all the performance you need in a Fabia...the 86 felt little different just didnt go quite so hard in the higher rev range...felt just as strong in regular driving.

I think the newer 105 1.2 in the Octavia would be impressive....the 86 probably a stretch too far for me for a car its size....we dont get the 86ps in the Octavia here in the UK

I've got the 1.2 TSi 110ps in my new Octavia.

Great around town, torquey, cruises nicely 4 up with 2 cases on the motorway. I'm averaging 50mpg.

Very impressive.

Its like when Rover launched the 1.4 16v K series engine with 105ps. People still bought the 1.6 because thats what they thought they should have...

I see that reviews for this engine in VW Golf VII are pretty good, so I'm wondering is it any good in Octavia as an (small) family car.

Mine is year old this month. Having run 2 O2s with 1.4tsi dsg was a little concerned it might feel a bit underpowered. Needn't have worried☺ Pulls like a train from low revs and never feels short of poke. Plus much better fuel consumption, easily get 45mpg on 20 mile cross country drive to work and 50 doable on longer runs

The 1.2 TSI produces more power and more torque than the 1.6 l NA petrol engine in my old Focus. I'm happy with it it.

@Rodge: is it  81kW or 63kW version ?

@Rodge: is it  81kW or 63kW version ?

It will be the higher-powered one.  The 63kW version is not sold in the UK, where the majority of the posters in this forum are from.  There will probably be very few (if any) posters here with direct experience of the 63kW engine in an Octavia.
