Tramlining

Featured Replies

Driving a standard setup TDI 110 elegance on 16" factory fit alloys.

I have repeatedly selected pirelli p6000 tyres as they seem to last reasonably well, however they seem to start to tramline quite badly after 12mths use and as the weather goes cooler, and I can feel very slight 'feathering' on the treadpatterns of them all. This is the 4th set this car has had and I am looking for a better choice next time

This car has had a 'Hunter' 4 wheel alignment setup done and all was found to be ok.

Anyone recommend tyres that are better for 'steering feel' on this car?

I have 17,s with 225/45 tyres and mine are Kumhos. They are very grippy as they are a softer rubber. Also good in this cold weather.

Tramlining? Do you mean when the car follows dips in the road or raised ironworks? If so my tdi 110 elegance on 16" factory alloys does the same.

If you mean wear then I would guess your tires are underinflated, its unlikely you have them overinflated. I run mine at 34 ish psi and am happy with them. This was chosen based on the profile of the tyre against the road and how it felt to drive it.

p6000s were known for tramlining and generally being a bit rubbish in the wet once they are getting close to the limit - certainly back in the day when I had my 306HDI.

Falken F452s make a good all round tyre, imho. That said, I am not sure if you can still get them, as they might have been superseded.

I had p6000's on an old car years ago, got them second hand with approx 6000 miles on. Needless to say 180000 miles later the t r ead depth had only changed by 2mm but they were like solid rubber. No give in the tread blocks or anything. Dry grip was ok, wet was interesting. They had a reputation of beung ditch finders on several 306 forums and I can understand why!

Odly though, my father in law swore by them on his jags (xjr-s and mk X's)

I guess the rubber compound will have moved on since our 306 days. Certainly they were quite hard wearing when I had them on years ago.

I had P6000s on a 1.6 Mk2 Golf and they couldnt even handle the power in that. Plus in the wet they were absolutely lethal. Awful awful tyres.

So that's my guess as to why yours is tramlining!

The main use of the P6000 is separating decent tyres from Chinese ditchfinders in tyre tests.

Had P6000's on a couple of Bora's & can't say I ever experienced tramlining. Not my favourite tyres by a long shot, but lasted very well & performed ok in all conditions. However I always replace tyres before they get down to the wear indicators.

Falken 452's on my old VRS were very good, but some people call them ditch finders too.

I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asy 2's on my Audi, & they are absolutely superb. If I find myself in a ditch with those on I could only blame myself, & not the tyres.

Few choices now and the budget ones are really good look at maxis, khumo and fallen tried all of them very impressed with all just chose the new ones on which was best value

I'd stay away from khumos last pair on the octy lasted for 6 months, while there's little wear on the 452s that replaces them. Dunno how people could say they're ditch finders though.

Tyres are a hard subject to discuss as people have different driving styles.

For instance on my sierra the tyre I rate the best were the cheap Silverstones that my alloys came with, due to the way it gripped and how you could feel how far to push . However when I put continentals on with way better grip it was harder to judge where the limit was so there were a few scary moments but I just didn't enjoy driving as much
