  • Result of Thursday's run:     Funny how I thought there would be more torque. The car is far more drivable now, easier to pull away, and just never gives up, although it's really the mid-range to

  • Well these bad boys have now turned up...     There should be some progress over the next couple of weeks now.   Somehow, the latest oil and cambelt change will mysteriously produce more power

  • A few more photos New turbo pipework: New exhaust downpipe: New, cleaned engine bay with it all put back together: Currently mapping and testing. All going well!

What is going on there!

The yellow fabia on show is my old one

The intercooler was a seat sport one and the pipekit was half forge half pd160 cupra

Lol?!

Yup might sue them for copyright

Gotta be worth a free cooler for the BM? :D

Right, lots of work done on the map, and a bit more tweaking required, but we're in good shape. Really looking forward to having a drive tonight as soon as I get back from Paris.

It's a bit mental apparently. In a good way I hope!

Mental = good.  Now is the time you appreciate decent rubber on the front wheels - oh, and ultimately a limited slip diff too.   ;)  I'll be curious to know what peak boost you are attempting to push through that turbo as I am sure mine was never pushed as far as it can, and even my new map on the hybrid won't be pushing the limit of it.

Yeah, with November approaching, now is the ideal time to have a large increase in power going through the front wheels :D

Greasy roads are the best for traction apparently :)

What turbo is it?

Hopefully Xav is enjoying his drive home.

Trying to get the smokelimiter right with 120+ nozzles was a challenge. The car got pretty well caked with my first few attempts. But finally its acceptable now. Had a few cold start issues but all resolved.

Running 2.3 bar to clear some smoke after 3k.

Needs minor rod adjustment to help response - we'll do that next time.

Will wait for Xav's feed back :)

Intercooler is working real well peak air charge was 27c. Compared with previous of almost 50c. Obviously its much cooler outside.

Jason with a good head you shouldnt need high levels of boost. On my golf i had 2.4/5 bar but after the head i reduced it to 2.2bar.

With these nozzles it means injection window is almost 11deg less than what i ran.

Well, I'm still alive :p

I need more time to figure out what tweaking / changes I'd like. The drive home along the M4 didn't really allow for much playing and I only managed a couple of 3rd gear runs and a couple of 4th gear runs, but naturally have to keep it short to stay under the NSL :)

I'm probably slightly underwhelmed by it as a first impression, it certainly revs higher and needs to go higher. Before, I would occasionally get to the red line. I was constantly going well into 5000rpm in the third gear runs...

But I think it's just soo smooth (more more than I had anticipated) that it's probably really fasy, but just so deceptive in the way it's delivered.

I need a try on a private road at day time ;)

A few more photos in daylight (just). Still need to go out and do some more logging, but in the mean time... :)

Stealth black. You'd have to know it's there

New piping. (yes, I will eventually change my cracked fog light)

It's a tight fit. Had to cut away a tiny bit of the top of the bumper, but it's hidden by the bonnet

It's completely standard, officer. Only modifications being a few bits of bling: cap tops and a shiney pipe (oh and a cover over the MAF, but he wouldn't know about that)

Right, it's stopped drizzling, roads are only semi-wet, time for a drive :D

Can you let me know about that MAF cover please?  I need to do something similar. :D

  • Author

LOL Jase. I think those MAF blanking plates are the new magic tree air fresheners - changing them mysteriously doubles the car's power :D

  • Author

Well, damp autumnal weather + wind + shower = wet, slippery leaves on road.

I did try a few 0-60 runs, but need to practice more and it's tricky getting the clutch bite at just the right revs.

However, I did do some in gear acceleration runs and times it with my 10Hz GPS logger.

Unless I'm misinterpreting the numbers, it's rather impressive.

So I make that 77km/h or approx 50mph to 127 km/h (80mph) in about 1.7 seconds / 51 metres

Just need my local private road to dry out for some standing start runs :)

Sounds good Xav - what did you use for those stats?

I picked up a Qstarz BT-Q1000ex. Not the cheapest, but quite flexbile. The software package is quite comprehensive too although a bit glitchy - your typical Chinese quickly-coded stuff LOL.

I liked the fact it was bluetooth capable (although I can't think you can log at 10Hz over BT). When logging at 10Hz, it's saved on the unit. Connect it up over USB and download the logs. You can then export to various formats.

Looks like a nice bit of kit

OK, I've done a fair bit of driving with the new setup and we're getting there: it's the low end that needs tweaking a bit. Currently, with the big injectors, it's a little sluggish and tends to get bogged down easily on hill starts, a bit like when the old PD lumps are cold and just don't want to accelerate. Once it gets at 2500rpm, it takes off. I now feel the pain of F1 drivers on the starting grid - it is quite tricky to get the balance just right between not getting bogged down and lighting it up - I currently have the same problem :p

Top end is nice though ;)

Will do some more mapping and adjusting of the stop screw next week. :)

Yes - it should still have "some" grunt below 2000rpm.  Check the duty cycle log in group 11 on a 1500 to 5000rpm 3rd gear WOT run. :)  Needs to be around 75% duty cycle @ 4000 revs from memory.  Any lower and the rod needs shortening, and higher and the rod needs lengthening.

Also, you really should be checking what the exhaust manifold pressure is like during the spool up as this helps to know if the stop screw and rod need adjusting.  Too much EMP for too long = bye bye turbo.

Stop screw has been adjusted and it's running a lot better - picks up lower down, around 200rpm so a lot more drivable than before. Top end is still fun and produces giggles all day long.

Also, I had it on the rollers yesterday (gate crashed a Nissan rolling road day) and it produced 261hp.

2910221900_zPP6BVR-L.jpg

A little surprised by the result as we were expecting a little more. Also, logging on the road suggests hitting 1.9 bar boost around 2000rpm (which is pretty good for a 2260 apparently) yet the rollers only show it coming on a lot later and so we're wondering if the loading hadn't been optimised for the low end.

Annoyingly, my laptop battery died so I didn't get the chance to log whilst on the rollers, but at least we now have an AFR plot and there's room to chuck some more fuel it without it getting too smokey.

So the tweaking will continue - we're definately getting there :)
