Xav's original fabia with a new lease of life

Well, three days of mapping and I still haven't driven it as I'm working in Paris. But tomorrow, quite excited by the flight back home and what follows.

Turns out my Milltek had a sports cat. That's now been removed (as well as the 10 years of soot coking it up!).

Apparently the initial spool has been reduced as clutch/DMF was vibrating.

Can't wait to see the result!

  • Result of Thursday's run:     Funny how I thought there would be more torque. The car is far more drivable now, easier to pull away, and just never gives up, although it's really the mid-range to

  • Well these bad boys have now turned up...     There should be some progress over the next couple of weeks now.   Somehow, the latest oil and cambelt change will mysteriously produce more power

  • A few more photos New turbo pipework: New exhaust downpipe: New, cleaned engine bay with it all put back together: Currently mapping and testing. All going well!

I only ever replace parts if i have to. Its one of the methods i use to keep the cost down.

It only done the clutch judder in higher gears but i wasn't happy. Can be adjusted without too much effort if required.

Nozzles have no more fuel to offer.

Goes well for sure.

Goes well for sure.

That's the bit I like :D

I'll have to get some software allowing me to change maps. Do you reckon the previous map would be OK with the new turbo? It would be interesting to to a direct comparison. I guess the old map would probably be better with the new mods so not a true before / after comparison but it would be great to see what the new bits add. Of course, I have both JKM's and SRR's dyno plots :)

And to think it's just the platform for further potential when I get "bored" LOL

At normal cruising speeds, I guess economy is still pretty much the same as it's before the turbo really gets going.

No Xav the old map has different n75 map and will not suit the new turbo.

N75 needs adjusting on every car for every turbo etc

The nozzles are stock so it'll be good to know what they can produce with a good turbo.

I have a golf with a 2260 and r783's going to srr soon - let me know if you want me to book it.

MPG should be same but i've adjusted timing again.

Yup, please keep me posted on the SRR date. Up for that :)

See you tomorrow :)

Wonder if I can get the boost wound up on mine before Combe? :D

I'd be interested in the results. I'm hoping to have a golf with a gt2260v dyno 'd soon running stock injectors/nozzles. Interested to see what they can do.

Yeah N75 was fun setting up remotely lol

Didn't get much of a chance on the way back from the airport yesterday, but did have some fun this morning.

At low revs, the whistling spooling sound makes you think you have the Police behind you

As expected, there isn't that much power low down. The initial surge I had around 2000rpm before the 2260 is gone - instead, it starts at around 2500, but from there, it just doesn't stop.

As a result, you're driving it more like a petrol than a diesel to get to the power, but despite starting higher up, it doesn't let go till around 5000rpm so there's a wider range usable, it's just a bit further up.

And to think that it's not yet even having to work being limited to 1.9bar and there's still a lot more available then the supporting changes have been done, it's a great feeling. Edited to add: I'm amazed at how much potential is there with stock nozzles. It just shows how over-engineered / conservatively tuned the whole package is from factory.

I just hope I still have my licence in 6 months' time LOL

Yes - sometimes the lack of low down grunt is a pain, but as long as it "pulls" sort of normally, then I am happy enough. You get used to hitting the rev limiter :D

Too true! I'm getting used to that a bit too easily

P.S CC tickets turned up, thanks

What about Xav's furby? :D

Its Xav's car and think he should say...what you reckon? :)

Hows your's running now?

Mine is better but still more to come. More stopscrew work/setting up and then wind out another 0.7 bar of boost. I think he is being coy about it, and wants to make some surprises on track tomorrow! :D

Stop screws are the worst part of this kinda work. Always ends up going in more than you want when doing up the lock nut.

Has the hybrid cleaned up all the smoke?

Not yet, haha! But its not too bad on smoke really. The mapping still needs some tweaking. I am running 3 year old mapping from my turbo in original form.

Cool. What boost was it running? Had a set back on the golf I'm mapping :(

Oh and Xavier, spill the beans :)

1.9 bar peak otherwise its tracking at 1.8bar

Sorry im getting confused with the cars lol

The golf runs 2.2 bar

OK, it's around 230-235bhp on SRR's rollers.

Did several runs, any heatsoak issues I had before are pretty much gone - all three runs were consistently within a few horses or two.

The prettiest graph produced a bit less, but has a nicer curve. Something to do with loading the rollers a bit more earlier in the rev to get the boost to come up a bit earler. But it does show that how you set up the rollers has an impact on the resulting graph.

Will upload it - need to get it out of the car - that's if I can find it after yesterday's action.

Also really nice to see there's hardly any smoke: just noticed Martyn's video on the track day post and he's following me from around 6:30 onwards for a bit.

Just need to sort out my coolant issue. Noticed the expansion tank bottle is around £13 from ECP so might pick that up to start with - drops of coolant are around the tank, so I guess it's that and not a lifted cylinder head.

Yesterday was a great opportunity to find what it's like. Power is really nice and usable, providing you stay above 2500. Pulls really well. But the combination of my inexperience at tracks, particularly Combe put a bit of a downer on yesterday's session, especially with some of the driving around...

Wonder how long I can resist before getting a ported head. Will do cambelt, probably injectors and everything at the same time. Bobby, what's your diary like? LOL

That's what slowed me down a bit. I was lifting to let cars pass then it would take me a quarter lap to catch back up again. Thought you car went really well and was nice to follow a Fabia for a bit.

Cheers Martyn, but are you saying I slowed you down? As a fellow SV rider, I'll let you off LOL.

Anyway, for those who wanted to see, here's a selection of dynos over the years.

Initial AmD map:

Original%20AMD-L.jpg

Then Richard's map (only on JKM's rollers, so the figures here are a bit lower than what SRR's rollers give):

Newer%20RW-L.jpg

Then Bobby's first map with the original hybrid turbo. Interestingly, the dip was hardly noticable when driving. Also, this is where I have a direct JKM / SRR comparison:

On JKM's rollers

Scan-130302-0001-L.jpg

On SRR's rollers 3 days later with the same map:

130305-Dyno-SRR-L.jpg

Now with the 2260 fitted and new map (but still standard injectors / cylinder head, etc):

130426-Dyno-SRR-L.jpg

Edited to add: I've been working on getting data electronically into Excel so I can then plot graphs in Excel, adjusting the axii so they're all on the same scale.

Here it is (minus the latest 2260 run):

dynoplots-L.png

Further edit: there's no way that the second map produced that much more than the last one I had before fitting the 2260: either those figures are not right, either the way the car behaves on the road is very different to the rollers, which I guess could be the case following what I noticed the other day (changing the load on the rollers). As they react to power, it could be that the graph with a dip was the response to the RR putting on a load quicker than the engine could keep up, resulting in the dip. Either way, it's how it behaves and feelis like on the road that matters more to me than the max figures on the graphs :)

Any 2260 will smoke like an absolute chimney!

I seen one yesterday running +120% nozzles with darkside 2260gtb and it made 284bhp but omg it smoked the whole dyno room out

Trust me they smoke.

There was also a golf mk4 running a 2260 darkside kit and it made 263bhp and it was the same!

Even my leon that made 198bhp smoked a tad. With power comes smoke! Even devonutopias fabia run from years back smoked like a chimney

Have you seen one that doesnt smoke?

Cause i seen two yesterday both darkside cars running darkside maps.... And it was a smoke fest, both cars are running the full darkside package with uprated nozzles

Another lad i know has the 2260 hybrid again with uprated nozzles and smokes again....

Well knowing the customers i can guarantee they wanted them balls out!

So what power is attainable without smoke then?

I seen 284bhp and 263bhp and they both smoked!

240?

Mine's currently above 230 but that's with the standard injectors. With bigger nozzles, more diesel in the same time = more power without adding more smoke.

From Saturday's Castle Combe action, Martyn following me:

Sorry for the million edits. Looks like you can't embed a youtube video into a forum with BB code AND specify a start time anymore...

No it wasn't you at all. You didn't nothing wrong. Was lifting for cars passing me to make their pass easier but some were getting too close to the braking zones with overtakes so I wanted to be sure.
