Xav's original fabia with a new lease of life

Slight update, or rather lack of update. There's been a slight delay in getting the turbo welded on - we haven't had it back yet from the specialist doing the job. It's a bit of a shame as we were hoping to make good progress over the Easter weekend.

Looks like it'll be done in the evenings over the next few weeks now.

Will have to be ready for Castle Coombe :)

  • Result of Thursday's run:     Funny how I thought there would be more torque. The car is far more drivable now, easier to pull away, and just never gives up, although it's really the mid-range to

  • Well these bad boys have now turned up...     There should be some progress over the next couple of weeks now.   Somehow, the latest oil and cambelt change will mysteriously produce more power

  • A few more photos New turbo pipework: New exhaust downpipe: New, cleaned engine bay with it all put back together: Currently mapping and testing. All going well!

Good to read the car is still getting some love.

Considering how many cars since this one (which was one of the first to have a hydrid turbo 10 years ago) have crapped itself it has done really really well and shows how things can be reliable if done properly. That 1st gen hybrid turbo thats on that car wasn't new when I got it either, that has been running on the AmD MK4 Golf prior to me owning it.

I would go with JKMs rolling road figures Xav.....always deadly accurate from experience

Well, some bits have been ordered today, some nice metal pipework to replace the plastic boost pipes. Went for one without the EGR sensor as it's been and will continue to be mapped out.

Will post some pictures when I get a chance :)

Cheers Ross. "Ultra-reliable hybrid turbo >190HP" soon up for sale maybe :p. It might not produce the most phenominal boost, but I remember from the logging sessions that it spooled up remarkably quickly, so a great "oem+" kind of upgrade or good for someone who went OTT with an OEM turbo and had it poop LOL.

Some photos..

New turbo welded onto manifold. It's just a teeny bit bigger LOL...

And fitted in place:

That's the easy bit done. Now, working on pipework: turbo inlet pipe, intercooler, downpipe, etc...

Will post when more work's completed.

Looks great! No issues with the power steering rack clearance etc?

Does your mate fancy making another manifold ;)?

I'll ask :)

IIRC the inlet and exhaust manifolds are too close together for you to do too much custom work: if you get a really nice free-flowing exhaust with equal lengths on each of the cylinders, it will get in the way of the inlet.

So we decided to just use an original exhaust as it's not restrictive (can get over 300 with it) and leave the option to play with inlet later on.

You also need to know the angles you want for the TIP and intercooler as it isn't a straight bolt-on: it has to be a weld job. On mine, the inlet was rewelded - you can see it in the photos. That was a decision based on the exact model of GTB you go for (I think mine's the watercooled version off an audi 3.0).

I think that's all correct, I'll update if I'm wrong and Bobby slaps me on the wrist! :)

Hoses ordered. Will update with more photos soon

Custom TIP and lower intercooler pipes arrived but really want 57mm couplings instead of just 50 so getting that sorted out. Photos aren't that interersting so won't bother LOL

Good to see you coming back on here and updating your car still.

I still remember you following me on the way back from a New Forest meet a few years ago when i took a wrong turn and took us on a mystery tour. :D

TIP is on. Lower intercooler pipe is on. Oil return came today. Should have that fitted tonight.

The top intercooler pipe that goes to the egr delete is the only oem pipe still on the car£

At some point, we'll change the MAP sensor: still on oem one so will limit boost to 1.9bar.

Technically should start today. Will be loud without a exhaust :)

4 bar MAP sensor is critical

Jason 4 bar is only required if we want to run more than 1.8/1.9 bar

Currently shes on stock nozzles therefore no point in running such high boost only to lift the head. (Pd130 head bolts). Should be smokefree with even less boost but we'll find out soon.

Just saying if the 2260 is going to be pushed over 2, it will be needed. I know you know this, so not sure why I am even saying it :D

Welcome to the long time lurker. Must be a record 5 years before first post :D

Smoke free sounds good (before we go mental LOL)

Lol @ Xav

As you can see not really one for post count :)

Btw shes started on the key this morning

Should have the exhaust done by tomorrow.

Nice to see the old girl getting some new toys :)

Looking good. Like how the existing parts have been used but tweaked instead of replaced.

is the maf delete done in vag com or isit in the map software?

maf delete is in the mapping, as is EGR delete too.

Cool, cheers. Might get it done when i have my hybrid mapped in.

It depends whether the mapper is competent enough to do a map based tune, rather than a maf / airflow tune.

Some later BLT's are mapped based but still use the MAF for the EGR.

No real benefit between the two unless of course you max the MAF out :) but that's not going to happen with a gt17 hybrid.
