Superb Auto Wipe Query

Featured Replies

Any one with experience of the Auto wipe on the Superb?

I assume it is supposed to sense the amount of water on the screen and set a intermitent program accordingly dependant upon the chosen sensitivity setting?

Mine seems to only wipe very very occasionally and is not as useful as intermitent wipe on other cars having tried all the settings. During light drizzle to reasonable rain we had yesterday

What are other Superb owners experiences in this aspect, is mine faulty? Any thoughts BigK do you get complaints or smiles? I have checked the screen wash bottle and tyre pressures and they are fine please help ;)

I've had a similar kind of experience, they are not that effective in light rain. (New model Vectra's are very efficient). Just one thought though, resist the temptation to manually wipe for a second longer and they will often give that much needed swipe.

Overall I love the car along with all the attention it brings.

I found it took some geting used to the rain sensor wipers, and like you wished for the normal intermettent wipe, especially as there is no indication as to which way increases or decreases the sensitivity.

However we are now ok with it, especially as it speeds up if the rain gets too heavy for just normal wiping speed. The main thing to remember is that you have to actively select rain sensor position on the stalk each time the car has been started, you cant leave the stalk set to sensor all the time as it doesnt work from key restarted state if you get my drift.

My advise is to do as I did, and play with the little sensor adjustment rocker( the same as the intermittent adjuster rocker) when you have light rain and note the sweep delays for the switch at either end, that way you should get used to the sensors and where to have the rocker switch adjustment.

Cheers

ps sorry if this appears to ramble.

Thanks guys thats put my mind at rest,

From your comments it seems mine is working as expected.

I will experiment next time it rains - whenever that may be  Not that I take it out in the rain but if I am caught in a unexpected downpoor. :D

Whats the min frequency of intermitent wipe is it likely to give in heavy rain? e.g once a sec once every 5?

I suppose its not so good in light rain as the sensor is in the unswept area of the screen.

So far I find the car great in all aspects - a VW fan mate of mine with a 1.8T SE 1998 Passat was in rapures over the Superb just kept saying I prefer this etc over the Passat and was amassed at the build quality. Didn't get any of his normal "Its a VW really comment" He even took his shows off when he got in so as not to dirty the ivory carpets nice chap :D

Just need to work out the memory settings on the seats/mirrors now.

I thought the glass side of the rear view mirror fixing, and that is in the sweep area?

Sweep times vary from very rapid to almost comatose with mine, but as I said we are getting to like it:)

Cheers

I have a sensor above the mirror, I asumed this was for the auto wipe?

That makes sense now, had a quick look the cable seems to go down the a pillar on passanger side then disapears.

John

I think the rain sensor is in the middle of the mirror against the glass.....or at least mine looks like it is. Judging by the loose loom you can see, I would say that cant be the rain sensor because Skoda would not be so careless as to leave wires free to be pulled and ruin the look.

Andy

ETKA lists an 'adapter wiring harness with rain sensor for automatic anti-dazzle interior rear view mirror', which would point to the sensor being part of that mirror or very near to it.

Rain sensor is standard fit, so there should be no loom visible.

Been testing the auto wipe wih the hose whilst washing the car - seem to work great under simulated mist and heavy rain, was impressed them changing from inter wipe to normal speed and then switching to fast wipe. and back down as window cleared.

Sensor def in mirror pad, thanks for advice and pointers everyone. Need some real rain now :D

John

I can confirm even the wife loves the rain sensing, and beats normal intermittent hands down.

What sort of fitting will be at the other end, is it standard then has an adapter for different phones? Is this type normally a DIY fit or do installers use them for minimal disturbance? Questions questions questions......

Installers use them too - it was recommended to me by one. The other end will have a small coaxial plug with a knurled locking nut. The coaxial plug is about 4mm diameter and the nut about 8. I installed mine the other way up so the wire disappears straight up behind the headlining. No idea why yours is "upside down" :(

Thanks , would heve been much better the other way round - I will hunt the other end in near future..
