Gearbox from VAG car

Featured Replies

Hello

I am new here. Please help, I have my car 1997 and my gearbox is using hard 1 and 2 gear. Very difficult to find other parts from gearbox, old cars in Russia go directly to melt and make steel.

Can I put a gearbox from other VAG car?

Andrey

Sorry my English is bad.

Before changing the gearbox, make sure your gear shifting mechanism is not bent or too wobbly.

Then check if your clutch cable is well adjusted. When did you change clutch mechanism last time?

As for changing the gearbox with another one from VW, other forum members might know better. I don't.

No other gearbox will be a straight fit. Fixing your box is the way to go. It's probably the linkage that is the problem.

Thank you for answers ;)

My clutch has 30.000 km put 2 years ago.

I have a new link rod put 1 month ago! because shifting lever was very soft and moved by himself. Now it is not moving alone, but it is hard to use gear 1 and 2 from start or when coming from 3 gear. What is wrong please?

I understand the entire gearbox can't have a straight fit, but interior parts can I borrow from VW 3? Like synchro rings, clutch, bearing, etc? My brother has one gearbox from VW 3.

When you say "hard to use", do you mean it's difficult to get into gear, or do you mean that when you try to put it into gear it makes a noise?

I doubt very much parts from a VW gearbox will be useful. You can try looking on VAG CAT to see if they are. From what I've seen (I have a new car that has a VW gearbox, and I've done a bit of research) there aren't any common parts between them - the Felicia gearbox is from the Skoda era, not VW.

When engine is not running, I can put lever into gear without any problem, any gear.

When I drive and try to change gear, sometimes the gear lever is only moving left-right, not up-down, no noise of gears grinding. I have to press clutch again, then maybe I can shift gear. Very often this takes place when I downgrade from 3rd or 4th to 2nd gear, sometimes from neutral to 1st gear. My shift mechanism on car is new.

Sounds to me like the clutch is the problem. Are you sure it's adjusted properly? It sounds to me like it's not disengaging properly, so when you press the clutch pedal down it's still trying to spin the input shaft slightly, which may be enough to cause this. Given that it will engage the gears OK when not running, this is the first thing to check.

I am glad is not something bad in gearbox, like synchro rings/clutch because you can't find any inside gearbox part for Felicia, only to buy a new gearbox :(.

I will adjust clutch cable but now it is exactly like in service manual, clutch pedal flush to brake pedal. I searched in this forum and people have their own way to adjustment, not two alike. What method is best and why? Thank you for your help.

For the purpose of fault-finding, adjust the cable so that there is more lift - i.e. tighten the cable end so that when you push down the pedal the clutch is lifted more. If this changes the gearbox problem then you have found the fault. If not this doesn't mean the clutch isn't the problem, but it's somewhere to start that is easy and cheap to do.

I had a Favorit before I had a Felicia (same mechanical parts), and it suffered a similar thing, despite being adjusted "properly" - the reason was that the cable had stretched.

On the Felicia, I just adjusted it until it worked properly - the minimum that was right, to give the clutch the most chance of staying alive - it got a lot of abuse in the rally car. When it was adjusted the way I had it, the pedal was NOT flush to the brake pedal, it was probably 10-15mm lower.

No problem, glad to help if I can.

As far as internals are concerned, I'm sure you could find someone here who would send you the insides of a gearbox - if I still had my spares I would sell you one, but I sold everything when I sold the Felicia.

I had to replace clutch cable. It was longer with over 1 cm than one new! Now the clutch pedal is exactly as said by djaychela and I can use all gears smooth. I am very happy. Thank you guys!

No worries, glad to help out!
