L.a.n Cold Air Intake

Featured Replies

I am thinking of changing the standard air filter on my RS to the L.A.N Cold Air Intake systems supplied by Impossible Performance. I know a few of you have had the system for a while and I wanted to know what are the pros/cons you have found with the system?

Thanks

Lloyd

Lloyd, you need to speak to DaveU about his. IP are waiting for delivery of new ones, I will PM you when they are in the county.

If there is enough interest I will try for a discount from IP.

Des

Lloyd,

I've got one on order and waiting patiently for it to arrive.

Chris

Hi Lloyd - I've had one for a month or so now - compliments a free-er flowing exhaust very well and gives plenty more pull at the top end.

Pros:

Noise (Darth Vader?)

Power (definately pulled better)

Looks (shinnnny! Filter itself is a work of art)

Cons:

Paranoia (was worried about driving it in the wet incase it hoovered up a load of water - but happy to report no problems thus far.)

Am I happy with it still? Yes

Would I buy the same induction kit given my time again? Yes

So IMHO

Hi DaveU,

Thanks for the info my main concerns where 1:) loss of power particularly at top end, 2:) the filter getting sodden during the frequent rainy spells we tend to have in the UK.

But from your answer these are unfounded so far. All I need to do now is to wait for Des to give me the nod when IP have them in stock.

DaveU can you tell me did you have to cut any of the inner sill to fit the system? Also how far does it sit inside the car? The reason for asking this is my RS has a dual IC setup and I belive the cold air system pipe may or maynot go pass the IC pipe work.

Cheers

Lloyd

Hi Lloyd,

the CAI has a metal filter so no probs in the wet. The filter sits just below the LHS headlamp to get lots of cold air.

Just got to check out another CAI but I may be up for this one; if there's enough of us there might be a group buy on. Des to sort out.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Here's a couple of pics - hope they help:

No cutting was necessary - although you should definately either drill out or remove the grill below the headlight to allow more air in.

The filter comes with an adaptor, so when it gets particularly bad weather, you can take the intake pipe out and locate the filter in the engine bay.

Cheers DaveU,

I won't have to drill out the grill as this has already be done for the IC on that side. Also how easy is it to fit the kit?

If I can do it anyone can.

Hi Des,

You haven't seen the damage I can do with a spanner!! Do you have an ETA on when IP will the said item in stock?

Supposedly this weekend, he has got one without the bracket at the mo.

PS Mike has twelve on back order.

Cool I'll give IP a bell this weekend, one lower strut brace and cold air filter system please.

Lloyd

An update for all those waiting for LAN kits from IP.

Today they told me they have still not arrived as there has been a supply problem from ABD in the US.

I spoke to ABD direct in the US just now myself and they confirmed this and said the LAN kits have been shipped to IP this week and they are complete with K&N filters, bracket and I hope the small filter.

Lets hope they will arrive next week and our patience will be rewarded.

I'll keep you posted and if anyone else hears (Des) let me know.

Chris

It's worth the wait.........

(trust me - i'm in IT ;) )

I know what your thinking is this yet another Delcac wind-up, trust me it's not i'm a builder.

I'm still waiting for my one. :(

After testing these filters on various cars I would say they are probably the best filter for power on the market IMHO. The fact that ABD can't make them fast enough is the problem at the mo not IP.

Its here. I have mine fitted and am pleased with the result, after a few miles through Rochester town on the way home I began to notice the hiss and woosh under acceleration. Seems more immediate power all over the rev range. There are some measurements of before and after being analysed and will have to wait and see what those are.

If anyone is contemplating a LAN Cold Air intake I would recommend the ABD kit.

Chris

Well ABD racing L.A.N. pipe now fitted and I must say there is a noticeable difference through out the rev range.

DV is now working overtime to cope with extra air flow but still is competing with noise level of filter which is very purposeful.

Quite easy to fit but you will need two pairs of hands to fit the filter onto the LAN pipe.

One thing I have noticed is at idle the LAN pipe is hot to the touch but after a blast was surprisingly cool to touch.

We did run the vagcom before and after and found a 2 - 3 Deg. drop in air intake temperature (very surprised) and an increase of between 8-9 Nm.

With power increase, no cutting, ease of fitting and the fact that there's no silly flexy hose to contend with this has to be one of the best kits on the market.

Whats silly about a flexi hose?

Ok guy's some question's(sorry if they've been covered already)

1.Are these kit's noisey all the time - or is it possible to be stealthy ?

2.What filter is used ?

3.If it's oiled - doesn't that effect the MAF

4.How low is the intake -- is it right behind the grille, and if so doesn't that mean it can do a good impression of a Dyson ?

Not too worried about fitment - look's straight forward enough,If I fitted one - am I right in thinking that the ECU would be able to cope and adjust as required(I know the standard one can account for fuel) or will it need to be fettled again by Jabba ?

Sorry if this is a bit long winded - I am very happy with car post Jabba -- don't want to spoil it.

Dave,

1. You can hear a hiss and woosh on acceleration . If you use large throttle openings then yes it is quite loud.

2. and 3. K&N using cotton element, dry type.

4. Its not low, its behind the bumper, you can jsut see it from the engine bay. Its way above the grille.

5. It seemed to take five minutes to learn the new intake.

It makes sense to me for it to be fitted before I have it Jabbd.

It defo goes better as Des agrees and he took some measurements to prove it on his.

This is all in this thread.

Chris

There are quieter alternatives (so I am told ;) ) talk to Bill at Badger5 (the post above yours Dave)

Although it could be said that only girls go for the quiet option

(you know - not meaning to be antagonistic or anything ;) )

The Dynatwist CAI is definately quieter than the ABD CAI. You can hear the DV venting and there's a nice induction roar though. It has made the car sound a bit more meaty as well.

Subtle intent is a good way of describing it.

Response is increased across the rev range; for me the low end response is a big improvement seeing as my engine is particularly lazy low down. Top end is superb.

Dead easy ot fit although you may want to remove the LHS arch liner to secure the intake pipe further. This is an advantage of the ABD CAI intake being made of metal.

From Bill, the Dynatwist costs

Must admit I was a bit dubious about fitting the ABD filter because of the noise factor but I need not have worried, the noise is quite infectious.

Having had experience and testing with both of these filters (the ABD kit and the dynatwist) I would choose the ABD kit everytime.

1. The ABD kit gives you better performance (according to vagcom on the same car).

2. It looks better than the Dynotwist (without that flexihose) IMHO.

3. It's a very good fit for the Octavia.

4. The smooth inside face of the ABD pipe must give you a better air flow to the MAF, judging by the ECU's reaction to the new bigger air flow.

The VAGCOM readings are a lot better now the ECU has had time to adjust to new air flow and performance is a lot better.

Des

Des

Could you advise what the new VAGCOM figures are?

Agree with you about the sound being infectious, has quite a bark on full throttle.
