Handbrake stiff.

Featured Replies

Hi All

Handbrake was stiff going up and down so checked for info on web. This site came up and mentioned an issue with the rubber slide that moves up and down with the handbrake.

I put a nozzle and straw on a can of silicon spray (dash shine), pushed the straw in between the rubber and the handbrake housing and sprayed some silicon spray down the edges of the rubber slide.

I then lifted and lowered the handbrake to work the lubricant in. It did seem to help but unfortunately the rubber started to creak. After about an hour, I tried it again and it is now silent again and doesn'tseem to be sticking or stiff anymore.

I assume it may need a wee spray now and again but it seems to have done the trick.

Cheers

Dave

Lubricating it won't fix anything.

Take the jumbo box off, remove the gaitor, turn it round 180 degrees, refit the jumbo box. If that doesn't fix it, you'll have to buy a new gaitor which is about £15.

Hi I'm having this same problem very stiff handbrake, 59 plate Octavia, I originally thought it might be handbrake arm on caliper s but reading these posts it could be a gaitor, is this gaitor viewable with console intact or do you need to remove it to see it, any pics or advise would be very much appreciated

Do you have a jumbo box?

Mine dosnt have the centre console arm rest, thinking now this means it can't be the problem that people talk about

I had the same issue, I had it replaced under warranty. The rubber gaiter had several creases so was stiff releasing the handbrake

No, I don't think so.

It could be the brake cables are frayed and catching.
