Does External temp sensor affect air con ??

Featured Replies

Question for the Techies

My Air con (cool setting) appears to be very poor when you first drive the car. I realise it takes a while to get started but it seems considerably longer than before.

My external temp sensor is a tadge knackered with the readings always low, especially after the car has been standing for a day or 2.

Wednesday was a fairly hot day yet the highest I registered all day was 10 & when I went first went out at midday (car hadent been used for a week) it read -49.5, YES minus !! So obviously it needs a trip to the dealers but I just wondered if the climate control takes readings from outside.

The cool air seemed to start functioning after about 7 miles when the temp sensor registered a staggering minus 5

Anyone any thoughts ??

AFAIK, the air con takes its cues solely from sensor(s) inside the cabin - if Ross C were still here, I'm sure he'd say for definite. Having said that, the sensors inside and out are thermocouples (two bits of wire twisted together), so they tend to either work or not work, rather than generate spurious signals. So your external temperature of -49.5 suggests the gubbins processing the temperature reading from the outside sensor may be knackered. If the same system processes the temperature data from inside the car (which I doubt, to be fair), then the internal readings would be out by the same amount, and your air con would be blowing super-hot air into the cabin if it was thinking the cabin was as cold as that!

The fact that you say it's taking a while to cool down suggests to me that you might need to re-gas the system. Costs about

thanks

I know that the external temp affects climate contol.

My SEAT Ibiza had climate control & after six months the AC/Climate went crazy.

Noticed that the external temp display was reading allsorts of strange temps.

Turned out to be a knackered external temp sensor. Climate seemed to be fine after that.

If external temp is below 4*C then the AC won't activate on the Climate Control. So if you get suprious readings below this you won't get chilled air.

Does anyone know where the outside sensor is located?

I have answered in your other thread sadik.

But yes the temp sensor does operate the a/c. It needs to know outside temp to regulate inside temp.

@ap0gee ;) ;)

Does anyone know where the outside sensor is located?

on the octy vRS it is screwed to the bumper behind the passenger side grille

dont know if its in the same place on the non vRS model though
