DIY first oil service 1.6CR

Featured Replies

Hi , I just did first oil change in my 2012 Roomster's 1.6CR. Potentially a bit more messy job compared to 1.9, get at least a couple cloths ready to prevent spills/splashes.

As with all my cars, I used Sealey TP69 vacuum extractor to get the oil out via a thin tube inserted into dipstick tube, used it for many years on all my Skodas. If you are into vacuuming oil filter housing, there's still some oil left there, though not anywhere near as much as on earlier engines, 100ml tops vs 200ml-500ml on earlier engines.

Prior to replacing oil filter, you need to undo a torx screw holding some valve above oil filter housing, then after you unscrew the oil filter cap you have around 10mm each way to remove it.

1.9TDI oil filter could be undone by hand and removed straight onto a cloth, the 1.6CR one really needs a 32mm socket and an extension+ratchet, otherwise getting the filter out will be tricky as it sits below pipework. The design of this part of the engine looks like it was done by 2 teams, 1 for oil, the other one for ?EGR, it is a mess. Put plenty of cloths around filter canister or it will cost you some cleaning time. Tighten to 25Nm. Remember to put the valve+torx bolt above, and clip back any cabling/pipework you undid for access.

There are 3 o-rings now on the filter cap/stem, instead of 2 previously found.

Anyway, the change went reasonably smooth, though I took out more oil than I put in, likely around 0.5l of old oil was diesel fuel (known issue on 1.6CRs due do them being DPFed up).

Will monitor oil level more closely from now on, possibly change it more often than 10k. Shame about this disappointing engine (or rather the DPF), really, as the rest of the car is A+ and has been from day 1 (well, more like day 7 after sorting out a few factory niggles).

I put ~4l Castrol 5W-30 VW507 oil (currently £30/4ltr at ECP). While doing this, I noticed that oil filler neck now makes a nice funnel, and also that there is Castrol branding on the 1.6CR engine's oil filler hole cap. What's next, BP/Shell/Esso logo on the fuel filler cap? :)

I checked DPF ash loading and it is 0, do not know if during warranty EGT sensor replacement 3k miles ago, they reset DPF filter ash loading back to 0 (which delaership workshop should not have done), I expected at least a single digit value, thougn I won't complain about the 0 :)

Service interval can be easily reset via MFD if you have one, it is described in the car's instructions.

Brake pads and tyres still look new enough, locks were thoroughly greased post delivery (as they arrived dry), so not much else to be done.

Finally, I noted that the 3-year free servicing deal that Skoda promotes on current cars is effectively between 1 and 3 oil changes (incl filter), and one air filter, fuel filter, and pollen filter each, plus half a can of silicone spray for the locks etc. In parts and effort it is worth about 3 hrs and £40, plus £30-£90 for the oil (at ECP prices), depending on how much you drive. Marketing value of "3 years free servicing" is astonishing, though :)

I hope you can use the info. Still waiting for warmer weather to have a 2nd go at fitting the aux electric heater (for next winter) and high beam voltage booster.

can't believe I haven't seen this post before @dieselV6!  Would be great if there were some photos uploaded, I do my own oil changes on my Discovery every 3-4mths and would like to do them on my Skoda too, although National Tyres only charge £40 for an oil and filter change (they have to order both in) and I get to watch them from the window while drinking tea...

Did you ever fit the auxiliary heater?

In the handbook it says Castrol but my dealer uses 0W 30W Shell Helix Ultra because of variable servicing. I have always used Castrol Magnetec on my previous cars. I have no concerns about using the Shell brand. We have come a long way since Duckhams 20-50.
